Ok, so legato is the name of the game and 3 note per string triplets is what you're dealing with this week. You've probably encountered shapes like these before. It's a sequence using the A minor scale.

I just pick the first note of every shape. So that's just picking the first note of 3 to keep this a legato exercise ok ?

Good.

Your deadline is next Thursday 5th April - Enjoy !

Hey Ben!

Just a quick question for you. The difference between ascending legato and descending legato for me is night and day. Descending legato is light years more difficult for me.

What I was wondering is about the actual left hand. I know with the pick hand you just pick the first note of each 3 note sequence then pull off the other 2 but everything falls apart for me going from one string down to the next. When you finish the sequence on the first string, do you automatically have all three note fingered for the next sequence before you pick the first note? I hope this makes sense.

I guess in a nutshell I'm wondering what do you do with your left hand or what is the best way to attack this? Ascending you only have to get one finger to the next string to keep the smoothness going but descending it seems like all 3 fingers need to be in place before even playing a note.

As you're doing the pull-offs, be ready to move to the next group of 3. As soon as the first finger (whichever that may be) does the first pull-off of that group, it's already moving towards the next note it needs to be on.

If you wait until the last note of the 3 to be played, you'll lose speed at a higher tempo.

Remember to pull-off towards the ground to generate a clearer note, some will make the mistake of more or less lifting the finger up, instead of plucking the string in a downwards (towards the floor) motion.

Hey thanks Dark Dude. That makes sense to go ahead and started moving the first finger even while the rest of the sequence is being pulled off. I will work on that and see where I can get with it. I knew the way my fingers were trying to do it felt wrong. I couldn't even maintain rhythm at slow speeds let alone at a quicker pace and I made a ton of noise while moving my hand from one string to the next.

Hey Greg, I know what you're saying. However, no, it's not necessary to have te fingers already in place, alost hovering smile.gif

As soon as your little finger hits the B string for the 1st note of that shape, then your other fingers are moving, ready to fret the other frets. When you're playing shapes that are either symetrical or almost symetrical (in other words, the finger span stays the same) then it's easier but I imagine you might find the 2nd shape quite challenging because your index finger has to travel further. Just reember that as soon as you've played the last note on the E string and your little finger touches the B string you no longer need to keep your index finger on the E string any more so it is free to hover and home in on the required fret when it comes along.

Think of it as - the finger only frets when the note is needed, don't leave any fingers hanging on frets smile.gif
