I bet you guys have often wondered - 'If I'm going to carry or lift this weight, will it affect my wrists?'

How do you take care of your wrists when carrying or lifting weights (pumping iron, pushups, carrying a heavy bag...it doesn't matter as long as it's heavy)

I work at what most would call a factory and we mass produce bread / bagels, so I lift quite a bit some days. The days I lift heavily I tend to wear a wrist brace to help take some strain off them.

Do you lift things at the factory above your waist? Or keep them below?

Never influenced me a lot mate, although we did our fair share of heavy lifting the gear into bus, from bus to stage, and vice verse afterwards. I have the feeling results of that will appear in the years to come..

Starting area of the product is at my waist and I raise to a bit above my head.

I have a specialized wrist support that a doctor gave me. I came close to some serious injuries a few years back and had to wear it for a couple months. If I practice extensively (6+ hours or something) or when I record that long, I wear it afterwards - usually when I sleep and it helps keep the damage at bay.

I've never had any trouble as far as heavy weights, but I did have a drafting class once and the hours and hours I spent on the computer tore up my wrists, I had to cut back on the playing. Seems like hard work and heavy weights make your wrists stronger, while using a mouse for hours on end can be destructive.

I bought some special support for the wrists when I'm using the computer and when I'm working out I use special grip stances in order not to damage my wrists. I've noticed a lot of people lifting weights in a very bad way for the wrists, some of them are musician friends who just don't wanna pay attention to their body. Too bad for them

Yeah, I often have awkward moments when carrying things.. especially loading my 4x12 cab into the boot (or trunk for you Yanks) of my car.. it can twist your wrist which is annoying.

The main thing I try and avoid is bending the wrist backwards.. I think my outside wrist muscles are weaker than my inside ones.. (could be a guitarist trait) so I could do with strengthening those. Cosmin's weight on a rope exercise was really good for that when I did it.. but I haven't got into the habit of doing it regularly yet, but I will. smile.gif

I should be more careful with this as my wrists are pretty sensitive. I usually carry a load (bass hardcase + pedalboard + backpack) when I'm gigging. I once bended my wrist too much by trying to get out of a bus with this load in hands and in between the seats. It produced an injury that stayed for months sad.gif

Never really thought of that to be honest, I just follow the old rule of "when it hurts, time to stop".
