Ok so i no i only show up once and a blue moon and for that i do apologize, but on the note of downpicking im having a little trouble i cant seem to downpick without getting some kind of tension. Ive been practicing it for the last 2 weeks and every time i try my muscles in my shoulder, forearm, or bicep/tricep go stiff on my i guess would be a good word, i.e. i can feel something in one of those areas. Any tips on how to maybe keep more relax when doing this technique?

You have to hold you pick relaxed, not tight and play from wrist. Sometimes when I don't hold my guitar properly my muscles get stiff. You should analyze how you hold guitar.

As Startear has suggested, playing from the wrist and analysing your posture as much as possible will help. Although since you've pointed out where your tension is you seem to be able to do this.
With my playing I rarely downpick constantly, I tend to mix it up with AP but there is definately a different sound to be had by just downpicking a riff. If I do constantly down pick something I think that I need to have a slight amount of tension to maintain a consistent, accurate motion but this may be wrong technique so don't take my word for it wink.gif
To make sure I'm not using undue tension I tend to think of constant down picking as alternate picking without the upstroke.
Also, as with any technique - if I'm tensing up in the way that you describe it usually means I'm playing something that is too fast for me so it's a case of slowing it right down until you can control all of your movements and eliminate all unwarranted tension. Then slowly bring it up to speed. Hope this helps smile.gif

I wanna add that starting slow and carefully analyzing and focusing on your movements, and thinking what you can do to improve the picking technique on slow tempos, will greatly affect your future practice sessions as well. We all have slightly different picking preferences, so choosing the right one for you should not be a big problem if you start simple and analyze the movements carefully for some time. The positive thing is that you are able to determine what the problem is, so you can overcome it.

Starting slow and specially warming up before will for sure help. Constant downpicking can be very demanding for your right hand so don't try it at too high speeds in the beginning.

Practice makes perfect !
You should warm up and build your tempos with metronome, speed will come with time and practice of course smile.gif

This is normal! You must as mentioned above, warM up before any practice. Play slowly with a metronome, you should be able to feel on which tempo your hand starts to tense up. Stay there and try to relax willingly and see what happens...With some concentration you should be able to pull it off. Also see if you are holding the instrument comfortably. With some practice you will get it, and those down strokes are always trouble.
