I know for recording software you need a DAW. I use Reaper, but Cubase is used a lot as well.

As Kaz says you'll need some form of sequencer to record on your pc. Both Reaper and Cubase are good and aim at a pro end sequencer. To me there are a couple of big advantage of Reaper:
i) You can download a fully working version to evaluate it here. ii) If you decide to use it an individual user license is only 60 USD. A full version of Cubase 5 is more like 600USD. iii) The development team at Reaper are responsive and so they are generally very quick to make improvements and fix issues. iv) You don't need to use a USB dongle to activate, license and run Reaper. WRT studio monitors - what sort of price range are you looking at? Studio monitors start at around 100USD and go up to over 10,000USD... Whatever the price range however a couple of things to consider are: i) Active or passive. Most people prefer to use active monitors since passive ones also need a separate amplifier. ii) Where you will put them. A lot of people put them on their computer desk close to a wall and sit about 2 foot away. For this situation 'near field' is better. iii) How you place them. Again many people sit the speaker on a desk or a shelf. If you do you should consider placing some sort of isolation pad underneath them like this one. You might also want to think about your room layout and acoustics. Take a look at Andrew's blog on building a home studio and also Kris's thread about making an isolation room for his guitar amp. iv) Input type. Monitors may have XLR, 1/4 inch TRS jack, RCA, etc inputs. Some monitors take an analogue signal, some a digital, some both. v) Price balance. Whatever your budget for monitors you should try and aim at a balance between your monitors and your audio source. There is very little point in spending 2000USD plus on monitors and having a 100USD sound card and poor room acoustics. I could certainly recommend a set of Edirol MA-15D active desktop monitors. I have a set of those (as well as others like Emir Hot
) since a couple of weeks and they are great, especially given the price (€ 149).

If your recording software recognizes the POD's usb port you won't need a sound board.
A free easy program you can try out is called Audacity. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ |

I suggest you check out Reaper DAW. It's free, and it is very good for starting up with audio production. Definitely check it out. Since you are limited with the budget, the best thing to do in that case is to use as much software components as possible. You don't have money for any outboard gear, so it is best to use plugins inside DAW. There are many free useful plugins that can be found on the web, so if you need any help with that, feel free to ask mate.
