Hi

I have a short question to Danilo´s "Finger Independence" exercise.
Is it IMPORTANT to keep the fingers on the fretboard or is it also possible to remove them ?
I have probs keeping the ring and pinky on the fretboard in position but if i remove them the exercise is easier for me
so thats my question, i think that it is important (for whatever) but i want to be sure

maybe my technique in the left hand is wrong ?!?!

thx
harry

It is not important really. I often keep my fingers away from the fretboard, but they do fret the right notes. It is a bad habit but not something you should be too considered about IMO mate. smile.gif

hey Ivan

the problem for me in that lesson is especially on the downstroke
if i keep the fingers on the fretboard i have problems on the 6th and 5th string to let the notes ring
because the pinky sometimes dump the notes

thx for your reply
Harry

There is an exercise that can help you to avoid this problem. You can try it, it works like this:
play a normal cromatic scale, like "1,2,3,4 " on each string (you can check this out in my warming up lesson), but leave the fingers on the frets, don't take them off the string when the next note is played.
As long as you stay on one string this is no problem of course, but as soon as you go to the next string in that scale it gets a bit more tricky. In this moment you have all 4 fingers on the low e-string for example, so the next note that you have to play is on the first fret on the a-string. Now ONLY move finger number one to the a-string, all the others stay on the low e-string, they will only be moved when their time comes... Like this you are forced to hold down the notes without muting the other strings, tricky in the beginning, but it really helps to avoid such problems.

hey marcus

i know your warm up exercise and i use it also, and as you explained i have exactly that problem
my pinky dumps the notes by switching the strings from low downwards

i try to do the exercise like its shown and i hope it will get better and better

so in your oppinion its important to keep the fingers on the fretboard ?

ok thx

No, it is not important to keep them there while you play a song, but this exercise helps you to avoid the problem that you have. It teaches you to hold down the notes in a proper way, without muting other strings. Once you master this you don't have to leave the fingers on the fretboard, it is just for training.
