It is not important really. I often keep my fingers away from the fretboard, but they do fret the right notes. It is a bad habit but not something you should be too considered about IMO mate.

There is an exercise that can help you to avoid this problem. You can try it, it works like this:
play a normal cromatic scale, like "1,2,3,4 " on each string (you can check this out in my warming up lesson), but leave the fingers on the frets, don't take them off the string when the next note is played. As long as you stay on one string this is no problem of course, but as soon as you go to the next string in that scale it gets a bit more tricky. In this moment you have all 4 fingers on the low e-string for example, so the next note that you have to play is on the first fret on the a-string. Now ONLY move finger number one to the a-string, all the others stay on the low e-string, they will only be moved when their time comes... Like this you are forced to hold down the notes without muting the other strings, tricky in the beginning, but it really helps to avoid such problems. -------------------- Guitars: various Gibson Les Pauls / Gibson J 45

No, it is not important to keep them there while you play a song, but this exercise helps you to avoid the problem that you have. It teaches you to hold down the notes in a proper way, without muting other strings. Once you master this you don't have to leave the fingers on the fretboard, it is just for training.
