Developing Picking Speed

At the moment I'm learning Gabriel's Zakk Wylde Style Lesson, and I can play everything in it, except one bar.

The lick I'm having trouble with is a 2nps pentatonic lick (video 3 if anyone wants to see it), that is 32th notes at 80bpm, which is quite fast, but a speed I can reach in 3nps patterns. I practiced it quite a bit, and when I stopped progressing (around 70bpm), I tried to isolate the problem. I tried it with the left hand at full speed, and I could do it no problem. When I tried to do the picking pattern though at full speed I just couldn't pick fast enough.

What I'd like to know, is how to increase my picking speed. I can tremolo pick or pick 3nps patterns at this speed, but it is just about my limit. I know I can get my left hand faster with trills, but I can't think what to do to get my right hand faster. Also since I can just about pick at this speed, I'd be interested to hear if there's anyway I can increase my 2nps picking speed also.

2nps licks are tough indeed,
hand needs to walk across strings much faster
compared to 3nps and there is less time
to find "a stand" for each string.
So, the only way to increase your picking
speed for 2nps shapes is to practice that very thing.
I would spend more time playing 2nps patterns over 2 string,
your hand needs to get comfortable with that kind of move.
After 2 string try with 3, 4 etc.

3nps and 2nps patterns are 2 different worlds
and I guess you spend too much time
playing 3nps patterns only,
which IS good but now you need some extra work
to get 2nps shapes at similar level. smile.gif

Thanks for your help Muris, and yeh, I think you're right. smile.gif I knew the mode shapes way before I knew the pentatonic boxes. I guess I'll shelve that lesson for a while and practice my 2nps picking.

Also just to clarify, are you saying I should practice it with just two strings to start off, and then gradually use more strings?

Yeah, I would start with that,
high E and B, B and G, G and D etc,
after that you can play over all 6 strings. smile.gif
