GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Less Is More Competition

'Less is more' competition
By playing less, you will quickly get better. Read on to find out how.
Challenge rules:
1. Find a backing track that you like from any of the lessons in http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/video-lessons/ 2. Record a video of yourself playing a rhythm or lead over the backing track 3. Play as simple as possible in your take. 4. Upload your take to Youtube and post the link in this thread to enter the competition
Goal:
The goal is absolute simplicity. The less notes you play the better. Use the power of melody and expression to achieve the best results, while keeping it simple. Let you music breathe with long pauses, and carefully chosen notes/chords/bends/vibrato .
We all tend to play a bit too much at times, and this challenge is about the complete opposite: playing as little as possible. This can be as hard as playing flashy licks - taming ourselves is something we often forget to do, even though it probably is the most efficient path towards making progress.
Therefore - we hope that you'll take part in this challenge and that we'll inspire you to think in new terms and approach guitar playing from a different perspective.
Instructions:
* Playing should be as simple as possible
* Recording should be done in video format. Must be a brand new recording, specifically recorded for this occasion.
* You can choose any backing track from the archive.
* Winners will be chosen by GMC Staff and based on the impression we get from your performance and ability to play less...but make it sound more.
* Deadline : 2nd of January 2014.

Pretty smart idea to boost members composition/musicality a step further

Just a little tip - less notes doesn't mean less articulation Try to impress us with tone control and color available in whole articulation box

Less, as in using less notes and less shredding techniques, right?
I'm gonna try taking part in this, but I think its gonna be hard... I've been working on my shred techniques lately, so we'll see soon enough

Less is more. Sometimes we think that it's something difficult, we can say, how will I do to make a solo with a few notes that can blow everybody's minds??
The answer to this question is simple: be yourself. I'm sure that if I ask you to sing the first melody that comes to your mind over a backing track you wont sing a million of notes in a second. You won't make your mouth sound like a machine gun. You will sing something nice, something melodic. This melody talks much more about yourself than a machine gun effect.
I think that if everything goes well, we will have many unique takes over this backing... forget the pre-conceived patterns and let your soul express.

Awesome to have you in everyone!
Please feel free to take any approach you find interesting as "simplicity" can be very personal and subjective matter. When I compose my lines, I usually first come up with something that I like and then I start taking out the unnecessary notes in order to make it sound more effective and easier to play on the instrument. I have learned that I usually come up with more then its needed for the song.
Again - possibilities here are endless as well as possible choice for the backing track in the GMC archive so please give it a shot if you can, you might be surprised by the results!
Who else is in?

Things are looking hectic for the next couple weeks, but I'll do my best to try and submit an entry. Can I make my own backing track for it if I choose?
Posted by: bahadirpeker Dec 5 2013, 11:59 AM
There are lots of good backing tracks and it's very difficult which one to choose! Especially after Darius' Vchat, I realize that a lot of GMC backing tracks can suit the competition!

Yeah - the possibilities are endless. What can also be interesting is to choose a busy backing track and play "less"

Hey guys! Hope everyone is having fun getting down with the slowness I've finally worked out a way where I can finally record my video the same time as my audio without destroying the quality of my product. That being said, this take is less perfect than my usual entries, but I feel that it is necessary for me to get in the habit if recording this way for own benefit. I chose the backing track for "Melodic Yoppe" . Hope I kept it simple enough for y'all! enjoy.

I used Jonathan Burgos' really cool Minor Funk backing track http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Minor-Funk-Solo/

One question: it was possible to use some licks from known songs for this competition? I mean it's not properly to use our own ideas? Because if it's ok this, all of us we can change ideas and use some "Nothing else matter" or " Since I don't have you" licks and maybe will sounds great I put this question because it's not only my question, after I talking this morning with some GMC friends.
I really think that Miguel have an awesome take and a killer tone, but "Fly me to the moon" lick make a difference in his composition. I hope you don't mind guys and Miguel for my question but I'm just honest I was very angry today when one of my GMC friend told me: "why to improvise, it's much simple to borrow something from a known song like him".

My take is clearly an improvisation and not a cover. I only thought of Fly me to the moon as a humorous thing. Both the backing track and my improvisation have nothing to do with "Fly me to the moon" and do not resemble it at all.
Plus, "all of us we can change ideas and use some "Nothing else matter" or " Since I don't have you" licks and maybe will sounds great "
I didn't use any (didn't look at TABS nor Notations) licks from anyone, actually, I don't know how to play "Fly me to the moon". I heard the voice of Frank Sinatra in my head and improvised/adjusted the little "voice-line" to the backing track I chose. Just thought it would be somewhat fun/humorous.
Anyway, I had fun recording the video and this is one of the main reasons I joined GMC, the competitions and collabs are a great!
I'm glad you enjoyed my improv. Thanks!

I will use in my next take the same humor that you used at 0:22-0:29 and if I listen your take very good I think also Gary visit you at 0:52- 0:56. It's not about this competition but with this kind of humor it's hard to explain to people why it's good they improvise for all seconds from backing. You made improv for rest of backing but what people will remember: your improv or the lick borrowed?

Monica, what's your goal? God, I don't care about winning. I made this for fun. IMO, I think you'd be better spending your time doing something else than scrutinizing my video.
Take care.

We do not wish to limit you in any way. The challenge is the simplicity - You choose the path how to get there All the takes so far are very cool and creative.

It's not about my goal here. It was not need to scrutinize your video because it was evident. Trust me it's not about competition and I don't want anymore to be a part from this contest. I just want my friends to understand why it's good to improvise and never give up when somebody enter in a contest "full of humor". I will finish this discution with you because it's not ok to fight with you on forum.

Hey! Here is my take for this competition! I choose the backing track from "Modern Ballad Soloing lesson" by Jonathan Burgos. While I was trying to choose the backing I realize once more that there are lots of good backings and lessons in here! I really love the process which backing to choose! Thank you very much GMC!
Loved the bends and vibrato from 0:40 til the end.

Hey tflava, I'm using Kemper Profiler Rack and the rig I'm using is a Marshal Jmp-1 with a Mesa Stiletto (Cab). Thanks for watching. I really had lots of fun recording this one.

Thanks! It's all the e-bow. I have the tone control way back on the guitar (neck pickup). Also there's zero drive. Amp is completely clean and no OD pedal. It's just what an ebow does.
*I thought the Sinatra reference was kinda cool. I started as a jazz guitar player and we quote all the time. The trick is to make it work musically and not sound contrived.

Ha,ha,ha....You know that Andy it's my idol and I really love how he mix all the techniques I think in my video you refer at that style aggressive of release after bends and play that note somewhere between normal but with a hard push of finger and a tiny pinch harmonics. I still practice to control this thing because it's very hard to stay in the correct pitch If you push that note to much hard will be out of pitch, if you push to much soft it will sounds just normal But, when I look at Andy, he can do this at every seconds Then, I get back at practice, practice, practice with the motto: If he can do this anytime, I will can do the same.....someday"

Thanks Gab, it did sound a little post rock like in the end I used a few effects here and there, I had an analog delay through the whole thing, but during the intro and outro I used a Slow Attack effect. And I also used a low gain tubescreamer (the Biyang one) in the middle section

Hey everyone - we are back with competition results!
First of all, I'd like to say that the judges had a very hard time choosing the winners due to the overall high quality of every take. This means that you all did a great job in this competition! You have all submitted unique and strong takes, your playing was expressful, simple, yet effective. We'd like to encourage you to take this approach even further and apply it to your next collaboration take, jam-with-friends or your original songs.
Without any further ado, here are the results :
1st prize
Caelumamittendum
***
2nd prize
Monica Gheorghevici
***
3rd prize

We also like to give a honorable mention to these 3 more takes as well which we found extremely cool!
