Hey, Im a sophomore in college and have been playing guitar for a number of years. last year i met a few people in college who play guitar, mainly two kids by the names of Connor and Paul. Over the summer I built a Warmoth guitar and practiced often in the hopes of catching up to Paul as he was better then i. So when i returned to college i felt as if i was close to playing like him, but not quite.

The other night we all decided to meet up and jam out a little bit, me Connor and Paul that is. So I pull out my fully customized Warmoth guitar in complete confidence and start to do a solo over Connors rhythm playing.

When i stopped the kid literally laughed at me. and said "That was SOOO out of tempo"

and i admit it, it was.. i have no experience with playing in a band, just over backing tracks.

Before this incident i vowed to never let anyone play my guitar; everyone has that guitar thats is... well you know... like a girlfriend; you just don't share them. I was actually pretty humiliated after Connors offensive interjection, humiliation is something that doesn't happen too often to me, so in complete submission i handed my guitar over to Paul completely contradicting my vow of faith (haha).

He played and everyone complimented him for how well he can play the blues... yeah great... whatever.... so a little bit later we're about to leave and on my way out i ask Paul, "hey man ill learn a song and we can play it you know?" to which he responded "just learn the blues man" in rebuttal i said "i know the blues" and he said "well learn it good then"

So after that second wise*** comment i made another vow........ to practice so much that when i go back there and play with those kids..... I will play so good and so fast and awesome that i will literally melt their faces off.... BUT i need your help!!! I recorded two guitar solo's over a backing track just the first two takes, nothing special that i did six hundred takes on to make it perfect.... i figured it would give a better cross section of my guitar playing

man forget the blues...show them one neoclassical sweep and tell them "hey, when you can do this, ill give you call"

but seriously...there are a lot of ignorant players out there..

i dont know about that guy, but a lot of blues players i know who "appear" to be good really are full of talk. people dont realize, but guitar modes, arpeggios, sweeps, and in some flashy cases tapping are all part of the blues. i dont know what he was playing, but i can bet you all he was doing was soloing over the same minor pentatonic shape...

anyways, dont let this kid get you down...you have the entire guitar master class to back you up...just keep practicing lessons, learn your theory...and then go back to the guy and show him what you got. Playing in a band is tough, it takes training, its not something you can just get up and do, its like a separate technique...go find some nicer players and see if they will teach you their ways

Again, wise words and nicely said.

Don't pay too much attention to what people say. Just listen to your heart and do your own stuff and music. If someone comes to you with a critique, don't be mad about it, just keep it cool. As Muris said, real good players would never give such "compliments".

Hey man. You're no beginner for sure, you've come a long way I can tell. If I would make some suggestions, do you know many songs? Playing over backings a lot is one thing but you need to be able to be the backing too. And what kinda warmoth is it? I've had my eye on their site for a long time wanting to build one.

Malmsteen is a common player that we associate with having an ago.

But you really never see even Him say something like that.

You don't need people like that man. If music was a competition, it would be on Sports Center by now. wink.gif

I guess they are just kids. I wouldnt care enough to play their "Mom, Im the best" game. Dont waste time and effort to prove them you are good. Dont give them the huge attention they are asking for. Self-confidence is the key to improve in everything I think, and If you need the feel to give someone a show to demonstrate they are wrong, its not the best way of being self-confidence.

Or maybe it is... well, anyway If you want to have some fun, go for it and good luck. But always keep the faith on you and evrything will go fine for sure! smile.gif

After downloading and listening to your tracks, I would agree that there's an opportunity to improve your overall rhythm. Are you recording against the backing track with some latency at play?

there's a really cool free metronome out there called wieldmetronome (should be at wierdmet.com or something?) that is quite small, lightweight, and flexible. For starters you would benefit from using it in its basic mode and following along with some of the rhythm video lessons here on GMC.

Kris even has one specifically detailing how to best use your metronome!

Awesome guitar! I've heard nothing but good things about warmoth. What are you playing it through? I can see a fender back there but its hard to tell if its a Blues Deluxe or a tweed junior or what smile.gif

[edit] Or maybe it's a classic 30... I must know now!

Criticism is dangerous tool, specially in hands of false people!
I would rather suggest you to be selfcritic as much as possible,
set yourself high standards and be harsh on yourself,
there's always room for progress!

However I did listen to your takes from first post in this thread
and there are many fields to work on indeed.
Timing is surely one of them, then theory and scale knowledge.
I noticed that you used Em pentatonic mostly when it's in key of A,
go for Am pentatonic instead, for starters.

A tip, listen to other blues players, copy their licks, steal phrasing ides,
improvising is not just about playing certain scale
but also playing with meaning.
That's why we ALL learn licks from other players and with time
we add bit of ourselves.
Work hard and result will come. smile.gif

well anger is the path to the darkside biggrin.gif

Its a race with yourself only, practice with metronome, learn from the very useful lessons of GMC, and practice a lot. One day you'll see that, that feeling will turn into serenity and calm. And they will start to appreciate you.

Peace brother, you'll get there.

Man,this kind of comment is so immature...
How can a musician hope to improve his own musicianship without staying humble?
I really have a problem with that attitude.
Plus your take was really not bad.
A bit unsure at the beginning, but got much better as you were playing!

I wouldn't even try to go back to impress these guys. Don't let them drag you into their game..
Just work on your own stuff, your time to shine WILL come.

Keep up the good work!

I think you should be very self critical in order to improve. This is probably one of the most important things when improving. If you don't face how good or bad you are, what is the use of other people labeling you in any way?
So I would set up practice plan, focus on areas that I need to improve, stick to practice plans and be very self critical. You are the one that make it all happen, not some guy you met recently and will probably not mean anything in your music career in next 10-15-20-50 years.
Best of luck!
