Hey Guys,

I'm looking to get a backup head for my Marshall JCM 2000 DSL. Nobody locally has a Windsor head so I can't try one out very easy.

I'm not looking to replace my Marshall but a second affordable EL34 tube head would be great for a backup. This amp was designed to be Peavey's answer to that classic Marshall tone. The price new on these things is ridiculously low for a 100% tube amp. blink.gif The sounds clips sound nice. Here's Peavey's info on the amp if anybody's interested.

http://www.peavey.com/products/browse.cfm/...™%20Head.cfm

And check out the price NEW!!

http://www.zzounds.com/item--PEV00584870

Any thoughts or advice would be great.

Thanks,
tommyboy

either you like it or you don't. You'll find that it has nowhere NEAR as much gain as you Marshall. Also, i'm a strong believer in you get what you pay for plus or minus a hundred bucks wink.gif That being said you may like it. I played it and it was nothing to special IMHO. Hope this helps a little

Uhm... I thought I replied to this but... I must be going mad.

I havn't heard it live but from what I've heard (been told, read etc) it's more of a vintage Marshall sound like 60's, 70's, Plexi. Which isn't a bad sound to aim for.
As a back up amp I'm positive it'll hold up for vintage rock and blues, I've heard Peavey claim it does modern tones too but until I hear it for real myself I'm in doubt.

A more interesting choice would perhaps be the Windsor studio. I mean, if you're fine having a head standing around only as backup that's fine. But with the Wondsor studio you could make yourself useful in the studio or practicing or recording. Built in attenuator, you can switch between any octal socket power tubes .... huh.gif great stuff!

In a gig you could prepare the Windsor studio with the XLR jack to your PA and if your Marshall blows a fuse you can just with the flick of a switch be playing again. wink.gif

I believe you get what you pay for also. However, at such a reasonable price it makes you wonder.

Haven't checked out the Windsor studio. I'll do this. Everyone say's the gain isn't over the top. I really like the old Plexi rock tone. This is what made me think it might not be such a bad deal for the money. I've owned a couple of Peavey amps in the past. Neither great or bad...Just solid rock tone. But the price is killing me.

Thanks,

tommyboy

Edit: Checked out the Windsor studio. I'm not a fan of combo amps. I've got 2 Marshall 4x12's that's why I thought the Windsor head would make a great backup.

If you buy it new and use it as a backup, I don't see why it could be a bad choice mate. It will not be your primary amp after all. Be sure to add 100-150$ more for proper tubes tho.

What would you do for that price? Even with JJ tubes it's not a bad deal. I just wish I could play one myself.

I must say, getting rid of this amp is the worst mistake that i've done thus far in my gear happenings.

Thinking back it's a great fricken amp, and not just for the price it's got a great sound smile.gif Defiantly try one out.

It's defenetly very cheap it is just slightly more expensive then a line 6 spider 3 head, but i don't know they have another tube amp that's under 500 euros the valveking and i heard that it's not a very good amp but i haven't tried it yet myself.

Ok, good news. My only problem is no one has one locally to try out. That's why I'm here asking for advice.

I've tried the valve kings. Not bad for the money. However, the Windsor is a EL34 based head. The old Marshall Plexis and JTM's which it's modeled after are what it seems to be trying to replicate. This is why I'm interested in getting one for a backup to my Marshall head.

considering it's "no money" I think it pretty safe to get it. It can't be so bad it's not even worth the $350, right?

For that price I would definitely buy one mate. It's great to have an extra head around, so you can pull out additional sounds and have a safe backup. JJ tubes are not bad deal at all, it should work fine with it.

Good luck with the bid mate, and let us know how it went!! smile.gif
