GMC Forum _ REC _ Gary Moore Inspired Bending #2

Posted by: mhskeide Jun 17 2020, 08:14 PM

Original lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Gary-Moore-Inspired-Bending-2/

The quest for bending/intonation/dynamics/vibrato goes on, so what better medicine than mr. Moore? Or at least, his style :) Tracked the guitar through my Helix LT. Missing some "oomph" from not having humbuckers, but tried to compensate with some fat overdrive.

I think you did great on this. Your vibrato is nice and wide, your timing is good and your synch is solid. You show really good left hand power on the vibrato, it's not shallow or tepid at all. you bending here is good as well, it feels bluesy. Also, you lighten up at the end for that softer part and change dynamics just by using your pick hand. Well done on that. Or at least thats how it looked. if that was a patch change it was soo smooth I couldn't tell. Solid 8

Very cool!

You are really digging in to the details and you are well on your way to becoming a monster phraser.

It is kinda hard to pinpoint anything serious you are doing wrong here - yet this lesson is all about extreme subtleties to get the right feel.

* Your vibrato is at times very good. However it is not completely consistent and my guess is that you still need to actively think about it - in order not to go 'all in' at once. Keep practicing that gradual buildup so that it's totally in your backbone.

* The timing is pretty good (again for this type of phrasing timing nuances is everything) - yet I still get the impression you need to think a lot to get it right. To convey a pro impression you would groove along and feel rather than think. We have given this type of feedback to MisterM for quite a while as well, it is sort of the last type of feedback you get before passing the threshold to pro sounding phrasing/timing.

When grading you - I will consider this is a level 5 lesson (we would need to change it to level 9 to reflect all the details) - so I will give you an 8 here since you are doing fantastic progress!

Hi mate!

This lesson is killer! Thanks for reminding me about it. biggrin.gif

You are on the right track here as you can obviously hear. However I think that there is a much more to get from this lesson by continue practicing and listening to the original take. Piotr's take is full of dynamics, and expression details that can give a great impact into your playing.

Some details:

- Notice the use of only downstrokes in some passages to give them a different accentuation.
- Notice the use of palm muting to give a different vibe.
- Your bending and vibrato are not bad, but there is work to do in order to get that aggressive Moorish feel.

It's an 8!

hey there!

Well....this is something really great - this lesson has it all - flavor, dynamics, technique, groove...just like Gary had himself. That's a slippery ground to walk though but an awesome experience as well.

It will be hard to describe some aspects in text but let's try to write down what we can notice.

Tonally you did a descent work, considering the fact that lesson has been designed for humbucker while you use single coil loaded guitar. Maybe just a slice of treble is missing to expose extended attack spots.

At 0:13 I miss that incomplete bend release, Piotr made in his take. Maybe your intention was good but it is not aoudiable abd it had an impact on overall tension feel.

0:15 - let it be more lazy. These kind of ornament bends should sound like broken in the middle of reaching the pitch. Stretch it a little more.

0:22 similar situation. I start to belive this is the one of main causes for you to differ in feel with Piotr's take. LEt it release for just a moment longer, more lazy...more of bend release to be audiable

0:26 - the trick is...these to bedns are not equal! smile.gif First is faster, second i stretched in time. Same situation. If you squire things like this for the sake of take simplicity then you loose the "juice". I will underline the importance of these details becasue this is exactly the reason why "THESE" guys sound liek they do. Doing just a draft or simplifying things will not make you profit of their "glory".

0:30 - these double stops should have different structure...actually the bend should reach the pitch very fast. Then you keep it steady for a while and start to apply vibrato.

0:35 - again - a little more lazy + there's a different rhythm pattern than original

0:39 - you rush a little and the last not shoud be cut short.(shorter than it is being cut already)

0:42 - went really well. Though...it's one of trickiest thing to copy exactly the same way each time becasue the additional harmonic of unwanted string is a "magic factor" to it smile.gif

0:56 here Piotr is actualyl changing pickup selectro to a neck position which has a different tone knob position than the bridge pickup. You can easily do the same on strat. Simply set the neck tone control quite low (for huge treble cut). Try to get this particular soft sound just by decreasing picking strength drastically.

Overall you did a great job and it definitely soudns like you have "somthing in you" that makes you not sound like a person who simply doesn't dig what's playing but if you would sacrifice more tiem and attention you could really squeeze out the essence of this one smile.gif

I wanted to congratulate you on this. Three Eights and a seven is a very impressive score indeed. This is not an easy bit to play and you worked through it all the way. Very well done and keep it up!!
