Fretting Hand Pinky Placement, One of the Problems of never having a Live Lesson Options

So I picked up on a nasty habit that I have the other day concerning my chording.

I realized that my pinky was always too far from my ring finger. After seeing a youtube video, I realized that I should be keeping my picking glued to my index finger as I am chording or changing positions.

Question Now, and this may be relative:

When soloing, is it recommended to follow the same "Clumped Finger" method. I usually keep all my fingers close to the fret board but often times I notice that my pinky ends up floating in the air below my fretboard.

I can see how this would be a problem when playing fast.

Thoughts?

I have the same problem and already opened a thread about this (among other problems).
It seems that genetically the pinky is one of the weaker fingers and at the time I spend a ginormous amount of practicing on it, though nothing happened. It's just not possible to have your pinky in control always. So yes, it does affect your playing but you can't do anyting about it. Good thing is, Muris has the same problem (as I remember correctly, from seeing in his Flight of the Bumblebee video) and look at him play !

Well, lucky for me, I have been able to develop strength in my pinky and when I pay attention I can keep it on or around the strings when doing anything other than chording.

I do agree, that there are certain times where it is, or seems impossible for you to keep your pinky from moving or bobbing around. LoL. The main lick of Sweet Child O Mine, If you use three fingers, it seems like your pinkey reflexes and bobs to the beat.

Imo you don't have to worry about that a lot,
some chord grips are leads will lead to that,
distancing pinky from other fingers.
You mentioned problems when playing fast tho.
Yeah, if you just think of that it could be problem.
But in the reality it doesn't happen cause there is no time
to keep pinky too far from fingerboard when playing fast
AND using pinky.
I would mention Guthrie Govan here tho,
he playing without pinky very often, keeping it far away from other fingers.
But his pinky is also very very well trained so when he does need it,
it jumps into game like a bullet and execute everything.
So it comes down to practice and experience after all.
