Hello mate,
After reading through sumitnxt's thread "what's wrong with me" I've discovered that Todd's boot camp is a technique and speed building system. I think it would help me. Would you mind if I joined? I could use his progressive system as my warm up and hopefully it will work well in conjunction with the lessons you give me. I thought his boot camp was a mentoring system like yours so I've never looked at it as I like working with you on my lessons but it looks a good progressive workout system that hopefully will help. Cheers buddy. Phil -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Thanks Gab,
My mom is home now but I have another problem. One of my main workers is ill in hospital, all week so far, so my already hectic working day is more demanding and I'm shattered when I get home. I try to practice but am mentally drained so can't focus on anything specific so I am just jamming away at anything. I can't believe these last few weeks. I'll be back Gab, you know I will, unless I go insane first -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Gab,
You're not going to believe this. It's Saturday morning and I've been in hospital all night. I had a nose bleed at home and it wouldn't stop for over two hours. My wife took me to the emergency room at the local hospital and they couldn't stop it so they shoved a big long plug into my nostril that felt like it went to the back of my head, agony it was. Then they put me in an ambulance and took me to another hospital ten miles away where I've seen a doctor and now I've got to wait to see an ear nose and throat specialist. I might be in all weekend but hopefully they will let me out today. I really can't believe my life lately. Speak soon mate. UPDATE: Not letting me out until tomorrow if it's ok then when they remove this horribly uncomfortable plug, it might be Monday. In going crazy in here already. Thanks Gab,
They let me out last night (Sunday), on condition have complete rest for one day, then no lifting or straining for a week. It scared my wife because at home when was pinching my nose to stop the bleeding, after ten minutes the blood started coming up through my lower eyelid, my wife was panicking, I tried to explain that because it won't stop bleeding and I'm loving my nose to stop it, it has nowhere to go so it's finding the path of least resistance and that is up and out through the eye. She wasn't having any of it, she had to go and be sick, then I decided to go to hospital. The worst part for me was the insertion on Friday night and removal yesterday, of the packing stick what's weird, in my case anyway, a few minutes after both insertion and removal I had some weird reaction where I went really really hot, extremely light headed and dizzy, really shakey and blood pressure dropped really low. This also freaked my wife out and to be honest it scared me too. Luckily my wife wasn't there yesterday when they removed it as it was outside of visiting hours. Anyway, at least you know I have reasons for my lack of practice and know I'm not just skiving Speak soon buddy, hopefully this is the end of my run of bad luck. Fingers and toes all crossed This came through on Facebook, I wonder if you could make use of it for students, you only really need to watch video 1b to get the idea. http://www.effectivemusicpractice.com/sfs-.../hdrfexwelcome/ Cheers buddy. Hi Phil! Thanks for the link. I've seen similar approaches previously and it's interesting. I don't think that students can find this easier than learning the shapes connected with chords but it can be a good approach to get different things when improvising.
I believe that this kind of "magical", "fast" ways to learn the fretboard aren't the best in the long term. It's much better to take more time to learn the shapes but learn them connected with the chord shapes around them. -------------------- My lessons

haha yeah, I don't mean that you have to be closed to different approaches and ways to see the fretboard, but from my experience there is one which is basic to start, that can seem longer but in the long term it's not.
The good / bad news are that there are not short cuts since there is no end... I don't mean that we don't have to transit wise roads in a clever and effective way. Why would we need short cuts for anything that is infinite? Music is infinite. Let's enjoy the journey. I guess my issue is I'm 50 and it would be nice to get to a reasonably proficient level where I know a few classic rock songs and understand enough to improvise if a friend comes round to my house and says "let's jam in A" so I know chord progressions and scale and enough of the fretboard. So that's the first journey to the docks where I can get on the ship for the never ending world cruise but have enough skills from my short journey to be able to get along with the passengers even though they may be on their tenth cruise. It's a bit like a half life I guess, or jumping across a road when you're only allowed to jump half of the remaining distance after each jump. It would be nice to get halfway quickly then enjoy the rest of the journey at least. Hope this makes sense This post has been edited by Phil66: Jun 14 2016, 05:23 PM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Hi Phil, I totally understand you and I think that this goals are much clear than what we've talk in previously talks. I think that there are some basics things in which you need to focus and you'll reach that level VERY soon.
I don't think that you need to learn lots of scales and shapes, you don't need to master all techniques, you don't need to play fast, you don't need to pick fast... and what's it's even more important, you don't need to try lots of methods and approaches to the same thing... In my opinion you need: First step: - Learn Pentatonic minor scale everywhere, as if it were you own body. - Learn 1 new lick every day. - Write down a list with 10 classic songs that you'd like to know how to play. - Practice improvising over different backing tracks, slowly adding other elements into pentatonic. - Learn songs from the list. Learning 2 each month is ok. As soon as you complete this first step (in 5 months), your goals will be achieved. You'll be able to improvise with friends over any song, and you'll be able to play some of your favorite classic songs. This should be your platform to continue growing in this journey. As always, I can help you with this, but based on our previous experience I think that you should put most of your music time into this in order to see results that make you happy. -------------------- My lessons
