Hi Jakub

Please write a short info about your current playing abilities, prefered styles and post some recordings or a video.
I am looking forward to this and I hope that you will learn many useful things throughout this program.

All the best
Emir

Hi Emir,

first of all, I cant explain how exalted I was, when I heard you are gonna be my mentor. Cant think of anyone better since gengres closest to my heart are

- progressive metal (mainly Symphony X and Nevermore, then Beyond Twilight, Dream theater etc..),
- neoclassical (Yngwie ofc... I dont really love that style, but I'd like to incorporate some licks and diminished arpeggios to my playing style)
- some Steve Vai and Joe Satriani stuff

and I also really love Kris Norris's style of playing (ex-guitarist of Darkest hour - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb5t4w0K1Ds this is good example of his playing style - solo starts 2:45). Cant stand any other metalcore/melodeath band tho..

About my abilities - I play for 2.5 years, cant really say, how long daily do I practice - I have quite a lot of free time (at University atm.) and I just tend to grab the guitar at some point of a day... and then just practice until I cant hold the pick anymore...

Regardig theory - I know almost enough I would say. I know all basic modes and their perspective boxes (cant really play on the whole neck yet tho - lack of licks that would help me get from one position to other), have some knowdledge of harmonic minor modes

About recordings - Ill post here two videos from my Youtube account (youtube.com/user/phoenygzus), one cover (quite simple song by Gojira) and one of my own riffs (dont mind the timing issues, I just bursted it out on camera) and tomorrow Ill record some AP, tapping, sweeping, riffing video, to show roughly where I am at, what I am practicing, at what speed...

My biggest pain at the moment is extremely fast alternate picking licks vocabulary (that "speed burst" sort of stuff you did on Yngwie and Romeo lessons) and also a issue with composing - I have a lot of small licks, riffs etc, but cant really connect them well - say putting rythm under some lead section etc. Dunno, if there is a way to help me tho.. maybe it'll just come in time.

If you want any other info, just fire your questions on me smile.gif

Cheers

Jakub

Thanks a lot for the info. I've checked your videos. You have a great feel for the rhythm even with some complex changes and grooves. That's very cool to see. Your technique is on a great way to become perfect. If you like that metal stuff we can go with some licks that can be connected together and we will produce a solo using all of them. I am very much into neoclassical style so I hope you can pick some cool ones from me smile.gif I will prepare a program for all of you guys within the next day or two and we'll take it from there. I noticed that you hold the pick with the thumb and the second finger. I don't think I have ever seen that but as long as you're comfortable and sound good feel free to hold it however you like smile.gif

We'll do an assignment every week and you're supposed to post one lesson for the REC program every week. Doesn't need to be my lesosn but those are the new MTP rules which we should follow. I can help you with anything you chose. Keep this thread for discussion and post your final work on the aasignment thread (when I open it).

I'll be back soon with the assignment.

Just a quick note regarding my way of holding pick - when I started, I used to do it like how you have seen on vids. Through time, I found out its better when playing lead/fast alternate picking etc. to hold it in a wrist, but this on other hand gives me problem with more complex rythm playing, so usually I just switch those two whenever I need to. Anyway, as time goes, I tend to use that closed wrist "style" more and more, as I am getting used to it:)

Btw. regarding that weekly lesson - does it have to be done in full speed in one week? If not, I would be thinking about your lesson in style of Michael Romeo - I am just afraid if week will be enough for some of those fast licks...

The lesson can be anything. I recommend that you go with something easier so you can pass everytime. We can practice Romeo's lesson slowly so you can post it when you're ready.

edit: Just a quick correction - REC take is once a month not week smile.gif

Well.. I think your Climax in a solo should be doable - there is only one fast lick, which I think I can polish up in a week. I just have a problem with viewing videos - reported to kris, I just dunno when will they sort it out.

Ah if its once a month, then it can be almost anything.. with your guidance, I am not afraid smile.gif

I can play whole Climax in a solo in correct timing (maybe Ill manage to record it today), except for that last lick.. the timing there is really tricky and I still cant remember the melody and its rythm... but they say its conflict and trouble that strengthen us so.. Ill just keep on trying smile.gif

Btw. is there some trick for learning those rythmically more complicated lines?

I am gonna post a video of my progress so far tomorrow - the 3 strings sweeps are not problem (can play them clean on 130 so so..), but I dont know, If I'll manage to do 155 BPM on 2 strings... I manage to do like 135-140.. but at 145 I am starting to go off time (especially the shapes with minibarre are very tough), since my right hand cant sweep across two strings that fast...

Ok thanks for the update. The deadline is Sunday so you still have time to practice. I am sure you can do 155 if you speed up 5 bpm every 20 min starting from 130. Spend an hour every day for this and you can do it.

Hi

Sorry for being this late. I was busy as hell and I still am. We can continue where we stopped last time as I got permission from Kristofer to finish the phase. I will just treat this MTP like we're still in the old phase. Let me know if you're happy to continue. If not then we'll just lock the topic.

Cheers
