GMC Forum _ GMC site feedback & suggestions _ Site Improvements Board

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Mar 21 2008, 12:50 PM

Well believe it or not but this whole board is here thanks to GMC members suggestions! biggrin.gif

We do have alot of ongoing plans - everything from adding basic features/improvements such as metronome, scale generator, forum profile upgrades (etc) to advanced/innovative interactive features which we don't want to reveal quite yet...

However all suggestions are welcome - many of the cool things we have already got are ideas from you.

Thanks again! smile.gif

I would stand for songwriting think tank - a kind of SONGWRITING LIBRARY:
First create a brainstorming thread directed on songwriting - strategies to use when songwriting, rythm patterns, riff licks ideas, chord progressions etc.

then create a Wiki thread about this and digestedly put there all the informations and progressions we gather. Make it a kind of inspiration thread... A lot of times happens to everyone (imo..) that he comes up with cool riff.. but it lacks something.. and you cant come with anything.. so you can go in there and catch some inspiration:)

I would gladly take a role in this as author of the wiki thread (summarizing the brainstormed info) and making it easy to read:)

Opinions please:)

not much to complain about. very satisfied, you are doing a fine job with the site. i could say this or that, but I think that you know what you are doing without my advice.

edit: oh one thing. the popularity thing, I consider that unhelpful for users and for teachers. that just encourages people to try and make other people like them, rather than tell them the truth. I ignore it, it is not worth it to me to spew bull **** just to try and make people like me.

I'm very happy with the site and my progress, would just like to see the difficulty level included on each lessons main page.
Keep up the good work!

Cheers.

+1 On Col

It would be very usefull to see the difficulty at the lesson main page, because sometimes someone gives a URL to a lesson but than I have to look it up to see whats te level. wink.gif

Edit:

There's another thing I'm not satisfied of and that are the groups...
Like now you have the wiki group... I think many peops would rather have all the members together rather than make sorts of ranks.

Or am I wrong?

I always though it would be cool if we could get more alternate 'skins' for GMC. smile.gif

+1 for skins.

There was a blue one,I liked it a lot but it's gone. sad.gif biggrin.gif

How bout a sub-forum of some sort for beginning guitarists who join. I think it would be a great place for new players to congregate and ask questions that have been asked over and over, (and answered of course). Also they would be able to interact with people of there own skill level. I for one came here with no skill whats so ever and would loved to had a forum just for my questions. You could designate a senior for the answers.

Thanks again guys! I'm miles from where I was at 4 months ago! biggrin.gif

awww but i like my little wiki'er badge tongue.gif.. it seems there is alot of uproar about the diversity rescently.. i don't mind identifying moderators but perhaps im starting to think the senior idea was not so great? I really have respect for the people who are seniors as ive been at this site for a while and remember them before they were seniors and such things.. and personally i don't mind ranks but its up to the people? maybe have a poll to see what GMC'ers would prefer.. i think having badges gives people something to shoot for and therefore makes them contribute to the site more.. i know thats one of the reasons i started writting for the wiki soo id really like to know what most people think...

That would be cool , but than again it would open doors to people potentially using GMC to send spam messages over PM wink.gif

Hello!
This is not a suggestion, but more of a question:
is there a way of "bookmarking" certain answers from the instructors in the various threads?
In these first 6 months at GMC I read and received so many useful answers from the instructors and seniors
and sometimes I'd like to re-read them but can't remember where they were...
I hope you understand what I mean.

This is an interesting idea and image not too difficult to incorporate..But it may be weekly one..With info about new lessons , updates etc wink.gif

EDIT:

One more idea , maybe putting the "SIGN IN" button somewhere on the main page..? I remember at start being confused how to log in to the site smile.gif

How about...

man, i got nothin. sad.gif

sorry

Posted by: Fran Mar 25 2008, 02:21 AM

That sounds really good!, even though I check the site & forums every single day, it would be cool to receive a monthly email summarizing new improvements to the site/forums, competitions, collabs, features, and even a list of lessons, just in case!

Would be a nice thing to check after coming back from vacation smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Mar 25 2008, 02:34 AM

How'bout being able to subscribe to a certain instructor to get an update when they post a new lesson? Or can you already do that? blink.gif

Posted by: drw84215 Mar 25 2008, 02:43 PM

Personaly i feel there are way to many instructers on GMC. everyday i find a teacher. and the lessons jump around. Id lke to see teachers stick with a set lesson plan. thats just my opinion. other then that i love GMC its great

Posted by: Muris Mar 25 2008, 04:22 PM

Deal is,GMC has many members and not everyone is interested into everything.
That's why we have many instructors, styles, genres etc. smile.gif

And perhaps profiles of members and instructors?

Anyway sounds like a good idea to me - monthly seems like a good frequency.

include stuff like
- New Instructors
- New senior members
- Advances to the site ie( newsletters biggrin.gif )
-wiki additions
- New virtual band uploads
- Blog updates
- perhaps a peice of gear which has been discussed

I think it's weird that there isn't a fast reply button on the "introduce yourself" thread. Where's this for?

Posted by: Outlaw2112 May 14 2008, 11:47 PM

It would be cool if there is a lesson recorded with a pod, if the instructor could post the pod settings to download the tone to...

I would say that of all things ever said on GMC, this might well be the one I DISAGREE with the most. How could you think having a variety of instructors is bad? This is one other than refuting, I would not even argue about. If you want to play well, have some originality, the more variety of personal styles you take as inputs the better. If you want to play same old same old sound like every other metal band or whatever, right, I agree, too many teachers if banality is the goal.

Two things I would like to see, since it has come up.....

1) Two types of bookmarks, one for lessons you know, one for lesson you have on your to-do list. But no biggie.

2) That lessons have the full song recorded without backing (as well as the version with backing) as David Otoole did. This I do consider a big thing, but only one instructor ever did this. A lot of times it is good to listen to the whole ball of wax, and imitate by ear. Hard to to with so much mix mush going on in the background, or so much echo you would walk on it. That is fine, just would like to hear a clear version also, as Otoole did.

edit: I see the response is a month old, thought it was new. Ok, I still totally disagree with it. More than that, it is so wrong, right up there with the sun rising in the west.

Posted by: kaznie_NL Jun 15 2008, 03:06 PM

I'd like to have a function on-screen to go the next lesson when you've seen the one you're looking at. Like youtube has. After watching the movie there appear two buttons, replay or next video would be good.

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Jun 17 2008, 12:11 AM

Also a new seek option where video loads from any point on a seek bar (like the new youtube player) would be a great option smile.gif

I think this is real great idea. When you travel or has a busy week you simply miss the lessons from your favorite instructors...

In addition to tracking one instructor, one should be able to track based on genre or technique. For instance, one should be able to track metal lessons or sweeping lessons.

This also helps alleviating the people who feel overwhelmed with too many instructor/lesson possibilities. I think GMC is great in diversity of classes. We just need to be able to find what we need.

I agree on that. keeping everything ordered, together with taking care of beginning players, are two of the toughest challenges for GMC. It's sometimes just so hard to find the right lessons! The advanced search is a big improvement, and so is the lesson planner (however I think that could be further improved).

Tracking your instructor, or genre is a nice addition to the advanced search and lesson planner!!

I really like the idea of in-depth profiles.. With uploads of our own music and stuff, almost like musicians Myspace, with a browser player.

Also, I came to think about something: How about a option for instructors to label the videoparts in a lesson? I just saw Gabriels Iron Maiden Masterclass lesson (Great lesson!), where two guitars play at a same time. And for some reason, I pictured this in my head:

Behold, my extreme paint-skills:

Yeah this would definently be a good idea since it alot easier to find the part you want to practice

@ Canis this is a very good idea!

i was just about to post what i need when i saw, that fkalich posted it a while ago. it would be really very helpful for me to have at least two types of bookmarks or two categories i can place them cause my bookmarks are getting really getting more and more cause i dont want to delete the ones i already learned and i also want to bookmark the lessons i am going to learn in the future....
would be a great improvement...

and (i think this was also mentioned many times before) it would be great to have the chord progression of every lesson written in somewhere....

... i have to add that gmc really rocks!!! cool.gif best site for learining to play!!

Posted by: Canis Sep 4 2008, 10:34 PM

If the above suggesion doesen't take place, people can do as I've started to do instead tongue.gif
I found it a bit tiresome that I have to log in every time I wanna access the bookmarks on the page, so I made my own system:
http://img261.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gmclessonbookmarkingsh4.jpg
I've made a bookmark folder on the quickbar in Firefox, with all the lessons I wanna learn at some time, and a "Learned" folder under that again (here on Norwegian: "Lært").
It's easy to make another folder that's your current "To do list", and it's easy to access =)

Posted by: Matt23 Sep 10 2008, 03:59 PM

Just a small idea, in the wiki would it be possible to make the links to other wiki pages non-case sensitive so that for example a link that said "Gibson SG Standard", would still link to the page even though page says "Gibson Sg Standard".

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn Sep 11 2008, 12:37 AM

good idea, but I don't think the wiki software allows it ...
