Hiya all.

I'm really getting into recording my guitar via the pc and I'm looking for advice for the optimum set up for the smallest possible outlay.

Currently I own a DAW, (Riffworks) and able to put down a drum backing track within the package. I record through a Line 6 PodXt which is great to simulate amps and get a good range of tones.

How ever I don't own a bass guitar but would like to put down a basic bass line and maybe some keyboards.

The question is is there a piece of software that can use to do this with my set up or will I need to enter the world of Midi and get a midi keyboard to do this or can this be inputted via my pc mouse and keyboard?

I'd be grateful of any suggestions / advice

Hello Crazyfret, there's a stomp box in Pod xt called "Sub octaves" which add a sound one octave below. You can try to tweak something on it, but this might be not quite good to imitate bass lines. You don't have to own a midi keyboard to do midi bass. I don't know how it looks in your DAW. However, on my DAW which is Samplitude SE it's quite easy, but it takes a bit of time to get used to it.

First you need something to make the bass tone - a virtual instrument or VSTi in fact. There are some free ones out there (google Bass VSTi). IF you want to spend some money, Spectrasonics Trilogy is awesome!

Next you need a way to get the bassline into the computer.

Sure you can do this with a mouse in pretty much all DAWs - I would guess Riffworks can do this. If it can;t there are cheap alternatives that can such as Reaper.

An alternative to the mouse is to use a keyboard for bass input - its a lot easier this way, particularly if you have a little keyboard skill. If you don;t, well you could learn! Or you could just regard it as too much hassle and stick with the mouse smile.gif

By the way, Midi these days is often a misnomer as most keyboards hook straight into your PC over USB, although you can use MIDI if you really want - the Pod has a midi port unless I am mistaken, but USB is easier.

For Bass I'm using Broomstick Bass and I'm always aiming for low cost solutions and ease of use myself since I don't belive it's better to keep the software at my level instead of paying more and sit with features I'd never use anyway.

Broomstick is easy to use, I've got a 25 keys keyboard just for chords and BB performs all the playing. You can press the on screen keyboard but I never found that an easy task myself. There's always the option of editing the MIDI track in your DAW.

Cost you 49 Euro as a download version. There are more expensive and more featured and advanced bass products if you want and need that.

As Andrew sad,Trilogy is amazing, and the best way is playing with keyboard.Skills that are required for playing bass lines on keyboard are minimal(one hand only). There are pretty cheap midi controllers(midi keyboards there). And the plus side you get free DAW's with here(Cubase and Ableton 4 Lite). At list I did get it with my controller witch Behringer UMX 49 http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~B...-49~ID~4819.asp.
With this controller you will get the free disc with 50 VST programs,in witch there are plenty of synts that you need.smile.gif

Yes, broomstick Bass is awesome - sadly it doesn't work with Vista - the only VSTi I have found that doesn't. I would still be using it if I could, along with Trilogy and its great for the price.

Also I can recommend Virtual Bassist from Steinberg. It has premade grooves, so you don't need a lot of programming. It would be useful to read a manual to get to know the VST, and then all you have to do is put the root notes, and it will play itself whatever groove. Very handy.

+1 on Virtual Bassist and Trilogy..You will be able to input the midi track notes via mouse so its not a big deal - you don't need a midi keyboard for that...

With trilogy you can't really input with a mouse very effectively, but with Virtual Bassist it is possible. Although VB is good for the mouse, Trilogy is VST ROMPlayer that has superior bass samples.

Been looking around at the suggestions you gave me and decided on the following for starters.

1. Get Reaper. Its fairly cheap and I've been messing around with the evaluation copy and its quite a sophisticated piece of software for the price. I'll leave the high end products for now because I suspect they are aimed more for professionals. Which I'm clearly not lol!

2. I like the look of Broomstick Bass too again for the price its what I'm after. I run WinXP SP3 atm and have no intention of upgrading to Vista soon.

3. By a fairly cheap midi keyboard controller connecting via the USB, such as this M-Audio Oxygen 8 V2. Is this any good?

Thanks for your input everyone. If anyone has any other suggestions feel free to add them here.

This M audio oxygen is good if you have limited space, but it would mean a lot to have a 49 key one. You don't need those knobs and buttons on the controller, you'll rarely use them. SO I suggest Korg 49 keys, just keys, pitch, and velocity and that's it.

Yeah space is at a premium in the box room at home sad.gif . Would be nice to have a 49 keyboard tho.
