Why Does Our Mojo Go?....., .....and how do we stop it?

Hello folks,

Been having a bit of a lost mojo time recently, you know, struggling to practise correctly etc, I've still been having some great fun starting HERE with the latest one being HERE.

My problem has been that my motivation for practising my main things; THIS, This and improvising with my Digitech Trio+, have gone out of the window sad.gif . So much so that I have been doing the ear training thing exclusively, I haven't progressed far with it but I have progressed. I'm not having to loop individual notes as often and I can listen to a few notes, turn off the playback and work 70% of them out without having to replay it back, with a good source like Adele or a flute, but not Paul McCartney laugh.gif (If you read though my posts from the first link above you'll understand wink.gif. That's what's been keeping me going lately smile.gif

My BIG question, and I know we are all different, is, how do we stop these bad times from happening??????????? I think a lot of it (with me anyway) is bourn out of impatience, thinking I should be further than I am, and the fact I'm 52 years old and can't see it happening before I leave this world, time just seems to be disappearing like sand through my fingers.

I know Gab and the others always say "Enjoy the journey" and "enjoy the process" but for me it's difficult, I always enjoy something new, then when I get so far and get stuck I feel I need to stick at it but I don't see the point in sticking at it and then I force myself to soldier on (against Gab's advice last time) for ten months with no improvement then the mojo goes again.

I don't actually think I've improved in the last 12 months and therein lies the problem. I think if I could improve a little bit each couple of months I would be happy, but I seem to have hit that brick wall and I can't smash through it, I feel I'll be a struggling level 2/3 player forever.

Now I know what I'd be saying to anyone else that posted this but for some reason, I'm a master of not following my own advice.

Maybe it's a self discipline thing, or lack of it, maybe I'm just more mentally transient than most, I really want to play well but it's like whichever lesson I pick lately, I can spend weeks on it, get to a certain level that isn't quite good enough and I just can't go any further. Maybe it's subconscious negativity and I'm defeating myself.

For the record, I thought about posting this a couple of days ago and today I've got a bit of my mojo back, (played the collen lesson and did some improv) but I thought I'd still post, it may help someone else if there are some decent ideas posted about this.

Cheers folks, enjoy your journey wink.gif

This is what is great about the forum smile.gif Wads of varied thoughts and suggestions. Good bit of advice to choose from.

Goals themselves can sometimes be a hinderance to performance. As odd as that sounds. We each have to take this journey on our own in the end, and find our own path.

When who we are gets in the way of what we want, we have to become something new or give up on our desires. The ability to change and grow is perhaps the most valuable lesson of all. Being able to embrace a new way of thinking and being in order to overcome our own limitations.

It's obvious that you are making the effort to find your way, your path. It's often the willingness to keep searching that best serves us. Persistence is far more valuable than innate talent imho. As is patience. smile.gif
