DO you think musicians should be able to play many instruments and why?

I can play drums, bass and piano as well as guitar but only the very basics. I think it's a good idea to be able to do that but not necessary.

I can play bass better than a few other bassist performing, and maybe even keys to some extent, but that is all on a very basic level. But I'm trying to learn the keys currently! smile.gif

Bass is my primary instrument and I can get around guitar too since I played it for few years...I played keys a long time ago but I can't consider them counting in like guitar.. wink.gif
I don't think a pro musician has to play more than one instrument..If he is good on his primary one he will get the job smile.gif

i think that music is .. well music.. instruments are different but the way music is made is all the same.. a pro musician should know how to create music on many instruments.. even if one is going to be there prime. I playing guitar primarily but i also have taken a crack at the Fiddle, Drums, Piano, bass and saxaphone.. im attempting to learn the basics of most instruments just so i can understand all of them.. it may not be a requirnment but i think knowing how to play many instruments is alot of fun! and a key part of being a great musician.. smile.gif

It comes with the territory I would say. smile.gif

Specially when you're composing a lot or recording,
you just have to know how other instruments work.
And naturally you start to play them a bit, yeah,it's good to know some basics or even more. smile.gif

I'm fairly good at programming various instruments, .. if that counts smile.gif
But if someone places me behind a real drumkit, it's going to sound like trashcans falling over, in a very non-rhythmical way.. and few people have heard me sing, and walked away with their sanity still intact.

So as far as real instruments goes, other than guitar and to some extent bass, i'm relatively useless smile.gif
