GMC Forum _ GMC site feedback & suggestions _ Site Suggestion: Comments Under Lessons

Posted by: kahall Mar 25 2008, 04:21 AM

I would like to see something done with the comments that are under the lessons. The way it is now a handful of people comment and then they die. I mean the thread, not the people. I am not really sure what the answer is, but I would like to see any or at least more discussions regarding the lessons themselves under that lesson. What I am getting at is no new members are commenting or asking questions on a lot of great lessons that are older than a few weeks. Sometimes even I would like to comment, ask a question, or just say "Hey Guitar Instructor, I just wanted to let you know I am digging, rocking out, chilling to your lesson right now/again! And have the instructor respond...you know if they want to even if they did the lesson a year ago. I know all this can already be done by going to the forum or sending a PM to the instructor, but I am lazy and I really think it would be an impressive improvement.

Well point Kahall! smile.gif

I agree that many lessons kind a die week or two after publishing.
I'm not saying that daily update is wrong, absolutely not,
it's just that it'd be great to have more discussion inside(under) each lesson, specially older ones.

Now,any ideas on how to get people more active?

I don't know for sure but... Maybe if you make the comments more like the forum. If somone comments on any lesson, even if it is old, it gets moved to the top of the random lessons on the right. ?? Something like that is where I am coming from.

Very good suggestion - so the idea is to facilitate communication in the lesson feedback and hopefully get more discussion there? I like the sound of that! smile.gif

Good point!

Maybe one easy improvement would be to keep the "post a comment"-box straight below the lesson instead of below the last comment. Sometimes that's far far far down and I feel myself that posting something in there would feel rather off the map...

Kahall, if I may say how I see it?

The "post a comment" is moved to sit above the comments.
It contains a check box which if checked triggers a PM to the instructor - "you've got a question waiting". Just to sort out the questions from the horray's
Replies in the lesson site diesn't contain a date (might scare off ppl if they see noone replied for one year)
Anything posted in the lesson site is copied into a forum post (with date). If the checkbox was checked it will bump the thread (just to avoid figry posts of pure cheering getting to the top of the forums)
Anything posted in the forum is copied to the lesson site so they always keep the same information.

Pros: Sorts out the questions and informs the instructor there's something to reply to
Keeps the same comments in two places, forum and lesson (if that's a pro, to keep double information)
Move of post box makes it easier accessed.
No date displayed wont signal wether it's news or old news, refraining someone from post just because it's old.

Great idea, well spotted! wink.gif

Also if I may add, I think it is very important for the lessons to have anonymous quality rating feedback. Like just above the lessson there is 1-10 scale and everybody (except the instructor who did it of course) can rate the lessons in terms of the lessons quality. This would improve overall quality I'm certain of it and it can start out of new lessons, no need to implement in the old ones too.

Yeah, that would work just fine. I can see where it might be abused just to get a lesson back to the top of the random list but I don't know if would be a big problem. There may be some here that would try that but I would be suprised. I also do not think having the date show would be a problem but either way is ok by me. I know this feature will require a lot of work as I have attempted similar things online, and this would be beyond my abilities but I know there is someone who could make it happen. I mean half of the members are in IT as a profession. ;-)

Sounds like a good idea to me smile.gif

I really doubt anyone would abuse it, it would be easy to spot anyway.

Yeah but I think the main idea here is that whats not being shown in the "MainPage" and "Random Lessons" is often forgotten about and ignored by bothe students and instructors.
