I am going to stick up for the French here. I expect the stigma perception of them being pushovers comes from WWII, but that is very undeserved. Of all the Frenchmen aged 20 to 32 in 1914, only half of them were alive at the end of 1918. When the strategy they adopted to defend themselves from German invasion failed in 1940, they simply were not going to lose another generation so soon again by slugging it out. No other nation made the contributions and took losses in the proportion that the French did in WWI, and they came out victorious in that war.

Without the French, America would never have gained their independence. Most Americans don't realize the French contribution then. Besides besides keeping the Colonial armies supplied, the battle of Yorktown was a French Victory with colonial support, not the opposite way around.

"Fanatic ethnic, religious, or national identifications are a little difficult to support when we see our planet as a fragile, blue crescent - fading to become and inconspicuous point of light - Against the bastion and citadel of the stars."

-Carl Sagan

Then again, absolutely anything Sagan says is quoteable, the man is beyond genius.

"There are these rare moments when musicians together touch something sweeter than they've ever found before in rehearsals or performance, beyond the merely collaborative or technically proficient, when their expression becomes as easy and graceful as friendship or love. This is when they give us a glimpse of what we might be, of our best selves, and of an impossible world in which you give everything to others, but lose nothing of yourself."

-Ian McEwan

That one gives me goosebumps
