"We can always beat the French" - First Rule of Muslim Warfare; This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese and Esquimaux. - History of French Warfare:P
I am going to stick up for the French here. I expect the stigma perception of them being pushovers comes from WWII, but that is very undeserved. Of all the Frenchmen aged 20 to 32 in 1914, only half of them were alive at the end of 1918. When the strategy they adopted to defend themselves from German invasion failed in 1940, they simply were not going to lose another generation so soon again by slugging it out. No other nation made the contributions and took losses in the proportion that the French did in WWI, and they came out victorious in that war.
Without the French, America would never have gained their independence. Most Americans don't realize the French contribution then. Besides besides keeping the Colonial armies supplied, the battle of Yorktown was a French Victory with colonial support, not the opposite way around.
