Hey there GMC,

are there any Logic 9 Users out there? Because I have a question about it.
Well, I am a proud owner of Logic and I'm a huge fan. There is much to learn but it is really worth it. I have a question though concerning all the guitar stuff in Logic namely AmpDesigner and PedalBoard and stuff.

What do you think about these? I have tried them out and I think the sound is pretty decent even though I haven't find a Distortion Lead Sound which really fits my taste...
Do you think they are really just as good as the toneport or guitar rig tones? Because I wonder the following...all those devices are more or less external soundcards which are also specifically made for guitar so the tone must be very decent. I used to own UX toneport 2 and the tone was very good indeed. Then I changed it Korg Pandora PX5D which produces also stunning tones.

So now what I want to know...aren't those Guitar tones you get out of Logic dependent on the Sound Card you got in your Mac? I have a very new iMac but I am not sure if that Soundcard can be as good as those Toneports or GuitarRig Soundcards, can it?

I"m a BIG LOGIC 9 fan Great to see other users here on GMC. I really like the Guitar Emulations in Logic 9. Also, the LIVESTAGE product that comes with it very cool. It's an emulator for live work which is very handy.

You can get all sorts of great tones out of the LOGIC amps, pedals, etc. However, if you are going for a serious heavy METAL type chunk tone, you may need some plugins. I bought the AMPLITUDE METAL plugin and it's wonderful. Others swear by the PEAVEY REVALVER plugin.

Try to download some demos and try them out.

Ok, so you mean thee Plugin-Sounds can keep up with the external soundcards like Toneport or GuitarRig? And is it not up to the soundcard you got how good the quality of your guitar signal is after you send it through all the channel strips?
For example if I used them for a Live Gig (And maybe also use Gio Board as a controller) I would use my MacBook. But I am not sure if the soundcard is good enough for it especially because it is 3 years old now. Those SoundCards are good but it s not their final purpose to do AmpSimulations and stuff..
What do you think?

I don't use Logic, but in general, it is very important to have a good sound card for guitar emulation. Fast processing coupled with HQ converters is what will determine the quality of the signal in the end (latency, sample rate etc).
Software modelers act as processors, they are still not that realistic, but very usable. With development of technology, in 10 or so years, we will start to see very realistic software modelers. In combination with more advanced PA systems, it will be enough to hold the line against traditional guitar amplifier systems.

What if I use an very decent Interface? I am considering about getting apogee duet when I 've saved up some money.
I don't exactly understand the relation between the interface and the soundcard in my mac. What impact do those two have exactly on the sound quality? (I know there a plenty of others things which effect sound quality but I am just talking about these now).
Ok, the interface delivers good quality if it has good DA converters, sample rate, low latency and so on. But the emulation still does my soundcard right? So that is why Toneports etc. are interface and emulation in one device right? So the best audiointerface is more or less pointless if the soundcard which does the emulation job is not good at all?

Please correct my if I am wrong.

Briefly ...

the Duet should be fine for prosumer work but will limit you to a 2in 2 out interface. If you do only need it for guitar then that should be fine. In its price range Apogee products, including the duet, are well regarded. They're not really pro end but then again they sit in a lower price category. Short of spending considerably more money an Apogee/ MAC/ Logic set up should be fine .

One thing to perhaps be aware of is that I think the Duet is firewire. Apple have had some problems with their f/w interfaces recently so make sure it works with your mac before you buy.

Ampdesigner and Pedalboard are pretty good, if you tweak it right
I don't like to many of the presets, but I've managed to get some pretty good sounds from it!

I mainly use Cubase, but I'm a Logic user as well and use it from time to time

I have come to the conclusion that AmpDesigner and stuff are good for crunch and clean sounds. Some metal tones are nice as well but I think they haven't really mastered it producing high gain lead guitar sounds. In GuitarRig you have the "For the Love of God" Sound which I am basically looking for when playing Lead guitar. I haven't found a way to produce that sound. If you have some suggestion please tell me . In the meantime I use GuitarRig as an insert plugin
