Hi GMCers.

I been practicing alt picking for about 3-5 months now. When I get up to 110-130 bpm, I started realising that I have to start moving my elbow to get it going

I have heard that this is the wrong technique and I dont know how to get rid of it! Its like my arm is programmed to use the elbow when i get to higher speeds.

If u have any idea how to get rid of this bad habbit please let me know rolleyes.gif

Thanks in advance biggrin.gif

Just practice at the lower speeds alot with your wrist.. when you move up conciously tell yourself you must play with your wrist and not your arm, of course it depends what notes your doing at 130pbm if you doing quarter notes then you will be going pritty fast and as Kris said sometimes its acceptable to use the whole arm, but only if your really flying, theres really no need. Just work with your metronome and don't let your body take over.. go to about 100 pbm and really work on using your wrist.

Hi pmr,

Can you play CONSISTENTLY at lower speeds with just wrist or does your wrist eventually take over? Something else you should pay attention to on top of what Mike said.

yeah, at lower speeds i play with my wrist. It's just when the speed increases that I start moving my elbow smile.gif

Then Mike's advice is 100% correct. Slow it down and slowly work your way back up using only and 100% your wrist.
