hehe 🤩

4000 lessons sure is cool 😎

And this will make it to the top banner, but not quite yet as we don't want to seem too desperate 🧐

Congratulation Kris and team.

Kris one thing I was thinking about this week.

With all the changes online and new platforms etc if you were to do it all over again from scratch now, how would you do it or maybe you wouldn't?

Very cool question!

GMC to me has always been the result of our collective view on how one goes about improving on the guitar. Now as music and taste evolves, so does the recipe for learning. So it's basically a moving target.

So in a way I am very happy we never claimed to have the definite answer, because there isn't one -and there never has been. I have seen many platforms who claim to have the only and best way to learn (bla bla etc etc).

I still have the same standpoint as I had when starting the site 15 years ago - you learn when you're inspired to play. Period.

Now as far as mistakes on the way, as we developed the site and the community - yes I have done more than I can count. Since it's all a part of the learning journey I am not sure I would want to undo anything.

However if I had to redo everything now, I would def choose a different technical platform. I would probably start with something standardised. But platforms like Wordpress, drupal etc were not very developed when we started out.

I've tried a few other guitar lesson website throughout the years, but I've always stuck with GMC. I like the forum the most. That's not to say the lessons aren't great of course. But lessons on guitar websites are lessons on guitar websites. Some are good and teach you a lot and some don't apply to us that well. But I've seen quite a few sites that don't have a forum like GMC does, or at least not in the same (old fashioned) way, and this is honestly the reason I stay with GMC. The community and the setup with the forum works for me. If it was all comment sections beneath lessons (like on some sites) without cmmunity activities in a forum, it wouldn't feel the same. The structure of GMC allows for a great community - in a day and age where things have shifted a bit more to Facebook-like structures or comment-sections. I'm all for changes and new things, but this structure here definitely works for me, so I'd always say "add to it", rather than removing and trying something else/new cool.gif

I'm pretty much in the same camp as Ben, also I've just "discovered" the "courses" section in the lessons section, this imho is the way to go forward, there are plenty of lessons covering pretty much anything you want and I know as new players come along lessons will have to be added to accommodate their admirers but I think courses are the best way to help develop one's own style.

Keep up the good work Kris and all the staff smile.gif cool.gif

I agree Ben.
The community is a fantastic resource for knowledge, advice and comradery

A few months ago I also grabbed some Andy James stuff from his site and I noticed some files were corrupt etc and also that people had commented about that over a year before and they hadn't fixed the issue.

Kris is so much more responsive to technical issues

Have you considered changing tack and doing what many sites have done to evolve and start to use GOOGLE ADSENSE for revenue instead of charging admission? I know we have a NO ADS poilcy here. Given all of the rampant change in terms of business model on the web, the rise of "freemium" etc. Could this be the way that spikes our participation again and gets folks back in the forum? Free Admission/Accounts but ad supported?

Yes, the community is the heart and soul of any site/service. So if there isn't a forum, I guess it tells you what you need to know about the owners spiritual life 😅

I don't ever see us removing the forum and just relying on comment sections, however we do need to upgrade the forum software at some point!

Agreed! Some people prefer to learn through courses/pathways, and we have many more planned!

Thanks, I try my best ❤️ It should be said though that running a site like this (or Andy's for that matter) is much more complex than it might seem. And small companies can def struggle just fixing basic bugs/functionality (especially if it's a custom built site).

Yes I have tried adsense in my early days running a site called freelicks.net .

I have toyed many times with the idea of letting guests register an account for some kind of forum access. I think it could give us a lot of interesting and new input!

However the current setup feels cleaner and has less security/maintenance implications.

I know it would be a huge change, but I do see 700 guests at a time (at least from what I can tell?) in the forum on any given day. With almost 1k or more per day in foot traffic, it could work well financially speaking, I think? Also, perhaps even more important it would give all of those hundreds/thousands of guest the ability to log in and become a part of the community when we could really use some more folks in the forum smile.gif
