Multi-effects With Tube Amp?, One multi-effects board, or multiple single effects?

Many things have been written about it, but I can't seem to draw the right conclusion... so here goes smile.gif

I'd like to add some proper effects to my current setup. I currently have a Engl Thunder Reverb 50 tube amp with a foot switch (just so you know), a dunlop crybaby and a boss distortion pedal (hardly ever use that one) which I can add to the FX loop... (with a Schecter C1 Classic and a Fender US strat btw)

I really like the sound of my amp and the distortion I can get by just using the gain on this amp. However, I'd like to add more effects to it. My first thought was to get a good delay effect (first one I'd like to add; thinking about a Boss DD20), but then I thought, why not get a good multi-effect pedal board, like the Boss GT-10 or the Line6 X3 Live and have it all in one?

Benefits I saw for getting this, apart from the numerous effects, is that I can also use it properly for my bass guitars (at least the Line6), and maybe for some vocals as well (though that is of minor importance). I currently add all kinds of effects only when I'm recording on my Mac, not through the amp directly, and I'd really like to just play on my amp (either Engl for guitar or my bass amp) and get my delays, etc going...

But then I read all kinds of stuff about using multi-effects in front of a tube-amp, not all too positive, and now I'm not so sure anymore.

I understand I should just go to a store and try it out, but I'd like to get your feedback on this in general. Basically, I can gradually expand my effects one by one, or spent about EUR 450 for a Line6 or Boss multi FX board and be done (well...).. but without giving up my tube amp sound.

as you can see, not too much experience with FX smile.gif

any feedback appreciated...

If I got you right you add the distortion and Wah pedal to the fx loop. These should go to the amp's input.

From an economical point of view it's hard to beat the multi effects, if I were you I'd go for something like the Boss ME50 or Line6 M9 or M13.
That instead of GT10 or X3 to avoid the amp modeling stuff since you won't need it anyway from what I understand.
That way you keep it more simple.

In case you're still looking at the X3 live, there does exist (as in all line-6 signal chains) the ability to simply not include any amp or cabinet modeling. You still get all the effects and settings, across two signal chains, and the expression ability to sweep knobs, wah, or even the mix between the two chains.

That's not to say the other devices aren't also very cool, just making sure we're clear that you CAN drop those XT and X3 live devices on the FX loop properly.

I've got separate stomp boxes in front of my tube amp and they sound really good.

BUT I recently purchased a BOSS ME-70 and I love it too laugh.gif
I got the ME-70 because I move alot in the weekends and needed some good portable stuff. Truth is it sounds just great in front of the tube amp too (I tried it recently). Go figure! smile.gif (I play at low levels in my apartment though, maybe at high volumes it doesn't sound so good... who knows)

Hello,

I went through the same questions a long time ago and I tried a lots of rig.

First, as said before, go for a unit dedicated to effects (delay, verbs....). Their quality can differ a lot from one to another. To me, I ended up on an Eventide Eclipse, expensive, but waow, it is sounding so natural. But after it is a question of budget and price / quality ratio which is not the same for everybody.

Then you have to be prepared to have most of those effect units to alter (slightly or a lot for some) your amp sound (dry soung).
This is mainly due to the quality of the effect processing and/or to the routing of the effect (series vs paralell).
The eventide turned out to be sounding extremely well even in an Fx Loop wired in series.

A tech guys from Eventide, told me that the best way to wire an effect unit is to have a line mixer with one line coming directly from your preamp or amp (dry signal) and one line coming from the the effect unit (wet signal).

Hope this answer to your questions.

Nice to see someone else here with an Eclipse smile.gif . One other thing I like about the Eclipse is the flexibility of the digital I/O - great for studio work smile.gif .

I would choose stomps if were in that situation, but ME boxes can be cool as well, specially newer ones. You should definitely get delay first, that is a must effect. DD20 is a good pedal, I had it and made a review, it is quite nice, and you will use the loop function a lot on it, it's quite practical.

+1 on Nova, the delay/reverbs are top-notch and sounds very good. Otherwise I wouldn't go for multi-effects at all, rather buy the boxes one by one, since most of them I owned colours the amps sound too much and doesn't sound as good as the pedals they try to emulate anyway.... I haven't tried Eclipse or Axe-Fx though....
