hey guys, I have a friend that has played guitar for almost 1 year and practices an hour a day( what he told me) But i have played for 4 years and practice 3 hours . And everyday he says that he is more skilled than me( speed, technique, etc:)
So I tell him that he can't be better than me now. Then he says that he is a fast learner. How should i approach this ?
If you have never heard him play, then I don't see why you should believe him.
But it doesn't really matter, does it? If you search around on youtube you can find many young guitarists that can play your head off, but it doesn't really matter... What matters is your music, your playing.
Your goal should be to play the music in your mind, not to play faster than anyone just for the sake of speed.
And also, in my experience, those who keep saying "I'm soo much better than you", usually aren't good at all.
If you are worried about your own playing, there is always room for improvement. And if it's about your learning methods, you can always explain it in detail, and we are all happy to help with as much as we can, I'm sure
thanks
Just say " Yeah, I know." and leave it at that.
Sollesnes is correct. I see kids eight, nine years old on Youtube that are better than me.. and I am 45. More power to em! If I can learn something from them I am happy.
That being said, I will tell you the people I have run across that claim to be great at something are often times not. They may be good or even very good in one area but often lack overall skills or knowledge. The fact that this person feels it's necessary to inform you that they are better than you is sign of their own insecurity.
What I have learned in my life?..it's usually the quiet guy or girl in the corner that have the skills to pay the bills
Do your own thing

Worry about how you can make someone feel with your guitar,
I know it doesn't sound easy, but it's really what's important,
sometimes you only need a couple of notes,
and maybe a cool effect
Funny, I know some of the absolutely most skilled musicians here in Sweden, and I've never heard none of them tlaking like that..... What we are talking bout is MUSIC, not sports or any other thing that can be easily measured. What counts in the end is the ability to transfer your message/feelings to the listener regardless of how You do it, which instrument You play or Your skill level. Daniel has a very good point here, there are some world-class guitar players that actually hasn't got any greater technical skills at all, but developed their own style and can make people absorb the way they feel. Go ahead and make Your own thing and don't listen to crap like this!!!!

THanks guys
Once again, music is an art, there isn't a path where you can go and measure who is better. Making music is about being creative, making an art of playing the instrument, and doing it so you can express yourself, your emotions and view on the world around you.
Bottom line - keep practicing, and stop comparing.
oh god...i dont understand how some people can be so ignorant.
the fact that you keep your cool and ego under control makes you a better guitar player already
This guy is your friend? :S
In my book friends support each other
wow....your friend sounds a bit like a douche, or maybe he just wants to mess with you?
Maybe a bit of the topic, but it reminds me of the famous topic; who is the best guitar player?
When people say Jimi is better than Petrucci because he plays with feelings, or that Herman Li is better than Eric Clapton because he`s faster, I just say while remaining as serious as possible: "seriously, I think I am the best guitar player there is". Always fun to watch people`s reactions
Congratulate him and pat his head, at a booooy.
But seriously, who cares who's better? Nothing you should need to discuss, guys. Just have fun!
So if skill would be proportional to time spent practising... Man, i would be a guitar god right now... It is possible to play for 10+ years and be only moderately not-shit.
As most of the guys here have said why worry about it, remember the story of the tortoise and the hare!
It's a fable.
Good read :

ah, ok thanks... yeah, i read that in german. now i remember...
Who cares if you're better then anybody? I've also got a friend, making a big deal about this always comparing. I got to say, I'm a little tempted, but a bandmate of mine says the opposite (I'm nog good for the guitar, bladiebla, stuff like that) and I keep telling him he is better then me, just to cheer him up. It doesn't matter that I can alternate pick faster then him, because he can play Andy McKee stuff I'll never be able to pull off and he keeps criticizing my tabs, because most of the time he knows better
as my mum used to say
self praise is no reccomendation
never worry about how others think how good they are nor try to compare your self against others, only look to others for inspiration if they are worthy of it, be true to yourself and it will all come together before you realise it. life is not a race niether is perfection in anything you do, it takes time.
