Hello ladies & gents!

I was looking for some information on a few guitar tones and how to obtain them (through hardware equipment, I'm old school.) biggrin.gif

1. The clean chorusy tone of Def Lepard's "Hysteria."
2. John Parr's "St. Elmo's Fire."
3. Mister Mister's "Broken Wings."

Thank you in advance for any info!

Sure thing! The easy way to do it through hardware equipment is simply to buy exactly what was being used by the guy who made the tone you want to emulate. The second way is to just buy a kemper amp and get a profile made by someone who also wanted that given tone. Believe me there is a kemper tone for pretty much every rig on earth.

So that's two ways to do it. Of course, both ways are not cheap but you didn't mention any budget.

Are you working within a budget or trying to use existing gear??

Using a digital modelling profile like Todd suggests is probably the way to go if you're interested in multiple tones/artists. Using the actual (analog) gear is a hit or miss because even if you get an exact set of equipment used for the record, please keep in mind it is further processed in a studio. Some use zero to little processing, mostly in debut albums.

Some time ago I found a video of a guy who managed to replicate the exact sound of early Iron Maiden and if I recall correctly, he spend quite a lot for just this one tone and I think he got some inside info on some of the gear used. A budget to get all 3 tones you mentioned would take up much more budget and time and even more if you don't get the rig list and setup info.

I looked it up and for the price I could get my dream rig (and not be able to crank it up in my apartment). But considering it's a complete studio, the price seems reasonable.

A chorus pedal is the consistent 'tone' thread in the 3 songs listed.
Lots of options out there these days.
Do you want a pedal or rack gear or all-in-one modeler/profiler thing?

*Def Leppards 'Hysteria' clean tones (and many of the overdriven parts) were famously done with a Tom Scholz "Rock Man".
All the parts (clean and dirty) are double and triple tracked.
