We have done a great job recording our takes, and with some “mixing magic” we have weaved them together into a final song/ medley.
But I have always wanted to do a collab where we actually write something together. It struck me that the easiest way to do this, is probably by using the so called “call and response” technique. This simply means student A records a first lick and then student B records a second lick after the first lick - and there we have our call and response, or “Q & A”.
For this collab I suggest a really simple backing track in E minor pentatonic:
As you can hear it's just just a simple rhythm guitar. This will allow us to take the track in any direction we want, depending on the contributions we get.
The track has a very bluesy vibe, but rock licks will work as well. It’s taken from Stephane’s http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bottleneck-Blues/.
I will be taking part in the Q&A as well - and I am really looking forward to it!
So how do we kick this off? Record a first lick and upload it here, the idea is then for someone else to record over the file you uploaded. All instruments are welcome (especially guitar! )
I will gradually be completing the final track, and everybody will get to follow the development of the end product in this thread.
As soon as we have started getting student takes - we'll also analyse how to approach the backing and the “call and response" technique.
Does anybody want to start this off?
Info:
* backing track is in 84 bpm * no deadline, we’ll just keep going until we have a finished track * please also send me the "guitar only" file, starting from point 0, without any effects (preferably a wav file) * Suggested scale:
00:03 Todd Simpson trading lines with my vocals 01:07 Short reply by Phil 02:55 Laurent (Fzalfa) is back some a hi gain lead, Phil added atmospheri, sustained whammy notes during his take 03:22 Chris S hi gain lead
The very last take (04:16) is by James who found the collab on facebook (he is not a member here - yet )
Other credits are sung (or rather barked ) by me throughout the track.
Thank you so much, this collab was a blast for me!

Yes! But my idea is to develop the backing track gradually - so maybe we will end up with completely replacing the original backing track with drums and other instruments.

Hello Kristopher
I want to play with you. Should I play this new audio track ?
Exactly - that is the plan.
I did not have Laurents' or Superize's files, so I used Todds so we could get started.
But if you record something over this last file, and also send me the guitar only file, starting from point 0, without any effects (preferably a wav file). Then I will include you (hopefully without any cutting).
Let me know if it makes sense?

Thanks! It's the very handy EZMIX2/Guitar Gods Pack. One click and BAM!! Instant tone on tap It was on sale a bit back for half off. I used it on the last collab as well. Easiest plugin ever!

Hi Laurent, this sounds cool to me and there is some adventurous note choice going on. Let's see if we get any responses.
Another option you could try, is to let Supersize's take end, give it a short moment of silence - and then just play 1-2 well prepared licks.
I know this is a little different from how you have jammed in previous collabs - but it's a good way of working as it forces you to pick some of the stronger licks you know. Also it is easier for others to "reply" if your take is shorter and more concise.
Personally, I prefer your clean[er] tone. This is just a matter of taste of course, since we have already had lots of different tones in the collab so far. But you have showed control of dynamics previously, and that kind of stuff comes through better with a clean tone.

So far working with your takes and this track has been very smooth, so chances are we'll continue expanding on the backing (so there will probably be more spots). It's too early to tell though.

I don't know what you guys say, but I think we're onto something here!! I am still tweaking levels (etc) as that stuff can take some time to get right when the takes are so different.
So Rhida answered Phil, so I'm technically the question then, right?

Excellent Chris! I am really happy to see some quick Q & A going on!
I would suggest you start with the 00:17 lick instead. This way you will actually answer Rhida.
The way it is now, I get more the impression that you are echoing Rhida's question - since your intro line (at 00:12) is so similar to his ending line.

Cool - I think this kind of response should work well. ------
I will mix some more and see if we can take the track in a new direction. Watch this space!
The new section at 02:55 is a completely different genre (as you can hear), but you can still play E minor pentatonic (and E minor scale).
Some suggestions:
* Record a short response (maybe around 5-10 seconds)
* Leave plenty of room before and after your take, so that several others can continue the call and response using the file you uploaded. So don't just export the part where you play.
* please also send me the "guitar only" file, starting from point 0, without any reverb/delay effects (preferably a wav file)
I am really excited to see if you guys get any ideas over this new section!

cool
I might need to move your licks to the latest backing track because there's been a lot added to the bit you've recorded over. I think its the same backing though so it should be easy move it along the track

nah matey its cool. Its a long collab and its confused me a couple of times I think I can slide your last take along the track to the next blank section if thats okay? I think I know where we are at just now
I went for a bit of a twin guitar thing with phil's bit, hope its okay. It sounded cool when I was playing it ( new bits start around 3:56 ) https://soundcloud.com/bleez666/q-a-guitar2-full
my guitar only track [attachment=42004:q_a_guitar2_only.wav]

you dont need me for that Im glad you liked it though. When I was playing along to the backing it just felt like a cool place to try and 'answer' your riffs.

Thanks Scott, I'll try to come up with something else tomorrow, maybe put a whole lot more gain on if I can handle the handling noise Don't know where to put it though so maybe you can do the same again if that's ok with you? Cheers buddy.

no worries at all dude. Take your time
there's maybe enough room on the current backing for about a 10 second slot maybe, dunno if the backing will get lengthened or something.

I really hate saying I'm going to do something and then don't do it. I really beat myself up over letting people down
Thanks for your understanding mate.

Heaven or Hell, doesn't matter - they're interchangeable in rock n roll. Especially when dealing with Death Reggae.
Man I thought you knew this stuff

Let's reggae on death metal !!!
i wait, and my popcorn bucket is near to be empty....

I think the ending should calm down a little bit with some death folk acoustic
Posted by: Kristofer Dahl May 25 2015, 08:01 PM
hehe ok, so as long as it ends with DEATH I guess everyone will be happy!

Once again - awesome Q & A Bleez and Phil! I am finishing this one now, just waiting for one more take from James who saw the collab via facebook.
Posted by: Kristofer Dahl May 28 2015, 10:03 AM
We did it
So what did we do?
Well we...
...took it from a twelve bar blues duo, to DEATH REGGAE
00:03 Todd Simpson trading lines with my vocals 01:07 Short reply by Phil 02:55 Laurent (Fzalfa) is back some a hi gain lead, Phil added atmospheri, sustained whammy notes during his take 03:22 Chris S hi gain lead
The very last take (04:16) is by James who found the collab on facebook (he is not a member here - yet )
Other credits are sung (or rather barked ) by me throughout the track.
Thank you so much, this collab was a blast for me!

Wow, wow, wow....this is a damn awesome final result!!!! Great takes guys! Big congrats, I really enjoyed The end of the mix was totally tasty and unexpected. But as usual, Kris always knows how to put the cherry on top

This death reggae stuff is most awesome

Came here for death reggae - got blown away by all the takes!
Congratulations everyone, this was so musical. I really like how all the takes blend and talk to each other. Also the guitar tones match up nicely, it sounds like it was recorded in the same studio. Really great job

Nice work, guys ! I like it, it sounds a little bit mad, it makes me smile. Congratulations !!!
Posted by: Phil66 May 28 2015, 09:12 PM
Brilliant, well done everyone that took part and thanks for the great edit and ideas Kris.
Thanks GMC
How about a 1 string collab next, it may encourage us to explore the neck a little bit. we could have a rule that GMCers can do more than one take but each take must be on a different string.
I love these collabs because no matter how bad you think your take is, Kris always manages to fit you in somewhere and make you sound hald decent
Posted by: Kristofer Dahl May 28 2015, 09:55 PM
Cool to see some new collab suggestions, I like the one string idea.
I am not sure about Chris' Techno Djent though
