Ever since I bought my wonderful Fender in California back in June, there has been something wrong. Open D-string buzzing (will get nut fixed) and other buzzes on very high frets / rattles when bending (frets 14ish +).

Now, something I have NEVER heard of before ...

D-string, 7th fret (A): The note (distorted or not) lasts for about 1 second before it dies out completely, with a very strange high-pitched squeal buzz. When sliding 7-5, the note becomes muddy immediately and dies away. When sliding 9-7 the note instantly becomes muddy and fades out FOLLOWED by a very high-pitched squeal (which is clearer than the note itself xD).

EDIT: When I tune the string down (not standard tuning), all of these problems somehow go away...

What on EARTH is happening ?! :S

You need to setup your bridge and tune octaves on each little bridge box for each string. It might well be that some frets are worn out as well. Take it to some technician I am sure it's not a big job.

Thank you Emir ! However I have tuned my octaves... The saddles, right ? What I find strange is that the problem disappears when I tune the D-string down... Both buzz and muddy sound when sliding... :S

Alex, any chance you can post a soundclip?
Rattles and buzzing at the 14th and above is something inherent with a radiused fretboard, unfortunately you have to set it up with some sort of compromise.
What guage strings are you using and could you also post some pics of the action at these problem points?
It's hard to try and diagnose a problem without the instrument in front of me but I'll try my hardest for you if you can post pics if I ask!!

Hey. Thanks for the comment, Jones smile.gif I recorded some of the sound it makes. Basically I begin by playing the note normally with bridge and neck, then I add light vibrato. Afterwards I slide 7-5, then I add vibrato. I do the same for 9-7. Both pickups are used.

I will post pictures if you need them, but I'm not sure they will be detailed enough to help your diagnosis. smile.gif

First question is this:-
How old are your strings?
I can't hear that D string 'choking' on a fret it just seems like it has no sustain in it! sad.gif
This could just be due to an old string. Also make sure your finger is just behind the fret when playing, if it's too far towards the headstock (nearer the next lower fret) then this can sometimes cause a note to 'choke' on the fret you want to be playing at.

Those 'overtones' when playing the sliding 7 - 5 are the unmuted strings resonating through the tremolo springs. Careful muting will sort this. You could also insert some rubber tubing inside the tremolo springs to help alleviate this! smile.gif

The same thing for the 9 - 7. This is also just starting to feedback which is causing the High Pitched part of the problem!
Sounds like your guitar has a natural resonance to an E. smile.gif

Hope this helps a bit mate!!
If not don't hesitate to let me know and we'll try something else!!

Thank you. smile.gif

My strings are getting old, but this problem has persisted since I bought the guitar, even after I change them. I placed finger right behind the fret I was playing. The overtones I do not mind, but the fact that simply sliding two frets down actually makes the note muddy is not right. I feel there should be some other way to solve this sad.gif Why does the sound become so blurry ? About the overtones, I have tried muting the strings (which I do all the time), but it doesn't help.

Any more ideas ? sad.gif

The fact that downtuning solves the problem is weird. Maybe the truss rod is not well adjusted for standard string tension.

Edit; Be careful if you decide to adjust the truss rod. You can damage the guitar if you are not careful!

I did turn the truss rod around 30 degrees twice with 60 minutes interval. I do not think it made much difference though. I am careful smile.gif

Try wrapping a piece of rag over the tremolo springs, loosely, and see if that makes a difference.

Ah! I didn't know you'd touched the Truss Rod!
It could be that you now have a slightly high point, or a slight bow in the neck which is causing the dead spot.
To check this hold the bottom E string at the 12th fret with a finger on your right hand and then (whilst still fretting at the 12th) fret at the first with a left hand finger. if the string is straight (which it is) then the neck should bow very slightly AWAY from the string. Only about 1 - 2 mm at the 5th/6th fret.
Check this for all strings, especially the D string and see how the neck is. If you can see where the high point is then take it to your local Tech and explain to him and he should be able to tweak it back in no time!!!

I will check, but just to clarify, I touched the truss yesterday. The same problem has been there for months... tongue.gif

You need fret leveling. It seems that the buzzing on the high frets, and teh 7th fret is the same issue. Higher frets are higher then the lower frets (probably because of the wear or even poor alignment), so they need to be leveled out a bit. This is a failry simple job, you can even do it yourself, but I recommend to take it to experienced tech.

Thank you Ivan. smile.gif I have been browsing YouTube and did come across some videos about fret leveling. I will take it to a tech. Just to know, though, why does the buzzing stop when I tune down the guitar ? smile.gif

No you aren't. You are "magock-something" which I aliased to "Alex" locally. I can alias you as "Shirley Mae" if I want. In fact, I have done so just now. Proof included:

Attached Image

You'll have to be careful with that "owned" word too, I guess wink.gif

EDIT: btw, back on topic: do you have a straight edge (a ruler or such) that you can test the fret levels with? That could confirm/exclude the fret heights being part of the dead note problem.
