Working Out Your Speed Limit, Might be useful?

I notice that a lot of the fast music I practice falls into two major catagories, 4 notes per beat, and 6 notes per beat. But I've never thought to match up the speeds that I'm playing at, in relation to my limits. At the moment, I can pretty comfortably play 4 notes per beat at around 120bpm, for most things after a small amount of practice (I'm trying to break this barrier), and comfortably play 6 notes per beat at around 85 bpm. There are some things I can play a lot faster than this, but this is a general ability limit. Faster than these limits, and I'm racing (I'm not totally in control = bad technique).

So if I figure it out

4 x 120 = 480 bpm
6 x 85 = 510 bpm.

However, if we look at one of the videos of the instructors, lets say Muris Alt picking (sorry, I don't mean to pick on you, Muris!) the velocity is 150 bpm, some of the notes are 4 bpm, and some are 6 so:

4 X 150 = 600
6 X 150 = 900 blink.gif

I presume these aren't at the limit of comfortable play for Muris. I'm just wondering if anyone else finds similar limits in their playing (instructors included!), and where those limits are.

It's not much about 16th,32th or tempo.
Depends a lot of notes choice or lick.
Some "slower" lick might be harder than "faster'. smile.gif

You are not doing your calculations correctly. other threads have explained this in the past. I am sure that Andrew has lessons that explain things.

No the calculations are quite correct. (Had to double check there for a sec!!) 120 bpm means that the metronome clicks 120 times a minute. If you play 4 notes in one beat, it means that you will fit 4 x 120 notes into a minute. And the same for the others too. Remember that Vai et all used to hold and break records of around 20 notes per second. That's 1200 notes per min. (I have no idea what the world record is nowadays)

I fully agree with Muris though that the lick itself has a large part to play in the final velocity, but I'm just trying to break things into quantities. Sorry!! smile.gif

Ahh,I see smile.gif

Well,I guess easier thing to fire the fretboard is to take some wild legato+few fingers tapping.
Haven't counted my top tho. wink.gif

you are incorrect with this

4 x 120 = 480 bpm
6 x 85 = 510 bpm.

perhaps that was a typo. by convention the quarter note is the beat. if you don't follow conventions in any language (and this is a language) people have a hard time understanding you.

You are quite correct. It was a typo. I apologise for the confusion caused you.

4 x 120 = 480 notes per minute
6 x 85 = 510 notes per minute. (Edited: Thanks Andrew smile.gif see below )

Though because of the tone of your post, I'm urged to add that had you, in the first instance, stated that my error was in the use of bpm, rather than pointing out non-existent discrepancy in my calculation, I would have had an easier time understanding you.

Cheers

The calculations are correct IMO, but I would call it notes per minute to avoid confusion ...

And to correct your typo,

6 x 85 = 510 notes per minute, not 51 smile.gif (and I knew what you meant Tank!)

EDIT: and Tank, you beat me to the punch with your correction!

Well I one finger type at about 30 words per hour - is that any good? In my defense they're long words, 2-3 syllables at least tongue.gif . I keep trying to type with the metronome but mine won't go below 40 bpm - or should that be wpm?

Cheers,
