GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Dust Off Yer Axe - Collab!

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Feb 14 2020, 02:44 PM

Hi guys,

I have been taking a break from my practicing recently. That can be a very good thing - provided I pick the guitar up again!
Today I felt like playing again - and I hope you will join me ❀️

I wanted to play over a simple groove, and basically just jam away with my absolute favorite scale - the pentatonic:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Here is what I suggest you do:

* Record yourself playing over the short version (you can use the JAM version for practicing)
* Upload two audio files, one with your isolated guitar track and one where we can hear the backing track as well
* No video needed, the final product will be a audio only

The idea is that I will be recording responses to your takes, but the collab is open for anyone to record a response to anybody - so no strict rules! First come, first served!

Key: C minor
Tempo: 110 bpm

FINAL MIX:

Here is my response to Phil.

I also threw in two empty rounds afterwards in case two people want to make a quick response to this! Just download and record your take, then upload for the next person! 😁

That's some of the tastiest playing I've heard you do Kris. It inspired me to respond to you, I hope that's okay.

First file is guitar only, second is your take followed by mine and fourth is all three so far. I've left a couple of rounds at the end.

I"m using my single coil pickup on this one with a good bit of slap back which I've been playing with lately. It's a hardware patch done on my Ampero played live which is rare for me these days as I mostly use Overloud so I can change the patch later in the mix. Not this time! smile.gif

I used to be a big fan of sound cloud. These days, it's running $16 a month and I keep hearing that it's about to go down the drain at any time so I killed my pro subscription package. Usually I"ll just make a video and put it on youtube when doing music..Most folks discover music through youtube. This wasn't always the case but it is now. To wit..

It's great to see you jumping in to things like this PHIL!!!!! I am thrilled to see you playing on tracks. Every time you try one, it's better than the previous. The only way to get good at playing solos is to "play through the suck". Every player has to go through it. That period of just not liking what you are able to play. I think you've earned your wings here Phil and I certainly like what you are coming up with I hope you do to!

Todd I need a slightly different file from you:

* check for audio clipping, this one has some nasty ones

* skip all time based effects preferably

* start the file from the beat 1

Thanks Todd,

I prefer my second take though wink.gif https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=60717&view=findpost&p=774843

Thanks Kris! Yeah a small sweep indeed, I've been working on it for a short time. I've found that ascending sweeps are easier than descending so now I know what to work on!!

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Mar 2 2020, 11:12 AM

Interesting! For me it's the opposite: I have always struggled with ascending. I find with descending that my left hand does half of the work with hammer-ons from nowhere - however that is much trickier with ascending patterns.

That is interesting and I see what you mean using the Hammer-ons. I think my reason for preferring the ascending is that when I was first learning scales I tended to always play them ascending more than descending, so my hand seems to feel more comfortable with movements from the Index finger to the Pinky rather than Pinky to Index. huh.gif

Awesome! I managed to cut some of it away via EQ. But what you have here is some kind of interference with your pickups - you can clearly hear that as you move it completely disappears for a little while. My guess would be that how you angle the guitar towards your display / monitors /speaker affects this.

Here is my response - and I love what we got!! 😁

This collab also kicked me back into start recording again - and I am working on a new GMC lesson in this very moment.

So thanks so much and well done everybody! β€οΈπŸ‘Š

Worked great! Super job everyone and Kris!!!! The audio only does make it easier for folks to pitch in. Sorry I ended up missing it. Ill grab the next one! I do like the video collabs just cause it lets you see what people are playing so that one can maybe grab some new licks. Same thing works on audio, just easier when you can see the hands. I like em both!!!

Agreed Todd - they are good at different things!

Video makes it easier for the viewer while audio simplifies things for the player 😎
