Fender has released a new series called “PLAYER PLUS”. In this new batch we have two strats, two teles, and two basses. You may have noticed a few of these “new fender” posts as they seem to keep making changes and putting out new lines of guitars. Let’s take a look at these to see what they have to offer.

Firstly there are a variety of colors/finishes available. As shown below, some of these colors include, opal spark, aged candy apple red, tequila sunrise, olympic pearl and sunburst. Still, new paint isn’t a great reason to buy a new guitar. The builder promises a “more modern sound” with these guitars. That in itself seems a pinch strange as this is Fender after all who is all about legacy and traditional sound.

The guitars come with the Player Plus Noiseless Pickup. As has been mentioned, this is a bit of a divisive feature. Many folks feel these pickups take out the tone that makes these guitars sound special. Also, the guitars feature an “expanded mode” for extended tonal range.

The guitars all have 22 fret boards with rolled edges, shaped in a modern C profile. The frets are medium jumbo and there is a 12 inch radius. Fender says these are very playable and modern feeling/sounding guitars.

PLAYER PLUS STRAT

Yup. It’s a strat! You can pick any one of the five available finishes for starters. Then you get the noiseless player plus pickups. Also there is a push-pull tone pot which provides the extended tone feature by basically combining the bass pickup with the bridge or middle pup. The trem is a traditional two point setup, not a locking system. However, you do get locking tuners which can help tuning stability.

PLAYER PLUS STRAT HSS
For those who want something other than the 3 single pup strat config, there is the HSS model featuring a humbucker in the bridge position. The other two pups are the noiseless player plus type. The humbucker can be coil tapped via push pull knob for single coil flavor. It also has the traditional 2 point trem and locking tuners.

PLAYER PLUS TELECASTER

The tele features the player plus noiseless pups in standard config. A push pull knob let’s you put both pickups in parallel if you like. The bridge is a more modern take on the 6 saddle tele bridge and Fender say it’s very stable and backed up with locking tuners.

PLAYER PLUS NASHVILLE TELECASTER

Breaking the mold a bit, this tele comes with 3 pickups. Arranged similar to a traditional strat. The neck is still the lipstick style. The third single player noiseless pup in the middle is intended to create a wider tonal palette. There is a push pull knob that lets you bring the neck pickup in for a bigger sound while using the bridge or middle pup. The bridge is the same as the player plus tele, and it gets the same locking tuners.

These look nice guitars and they do offer some great looking paint jobs and interesting features. However, it seems like Fender makes a few small tweaks, and bam, releases a “new” line of guitars. I’ve noticed that Gibson seems to be doing this as well. I’m half expecting Fender to come out with HEADLESS guitars at some point as Ibanez did a bit back.

If I was in the market for a Strat now, I just wouldn't know where to start. So many series now. I've got my Strat and won't be needing another as it's a beautiful guitar but I feel for those deciding now.

Many of the series also have a price overlap which makes it even more trick.

So glad I don't get gas much these days wink.gif
