Hey GMCers,

I have always wondered something: Sometimes when a band is playing a catchy part of their song, the crowd starts clapping and many times they can't continue a good tempo with their clapping so they either fall behind or go in front of the real tempo of the part. Doesn't that confuse the guitar player or for that matter any other band member? tongue.gif I have seen this happen so many times, it is so bad biggrin.gif

Maybe someone who is in a band and who has experienced this can answer smile.gif

Cheers,
O.

This happens a lot at church, the congregation's clapping can sound like rain hitting a roof, then there is the singing. If I'm leading by myself rather than with a full band it's a really tough job!

Happens all the time in concerts or at festivals in Germany laugh.gif
I first thought it was a german thing, but seen many videos from around the world where this happens. Especially at slower songs which start without drums biggrin.gif It actually confuses me being in the crowd biggrin.gif
The bands never seemed to mind though...

laugh.gif just witnessed this at the Linkin Park gig last night biggrin.gif During all the songs (since they played all their hits with just a few exceptions) the crowd was clapping and singing wildly. Needless to say, behind the beat ...

Well, the experience seen from the stage is a bit different - I usually listen to the monitors, which cover the crowd, so it's no biggie and sometimes either one of my drummers is keeping a steady pulse with the hi-hats. Both of them play with a metronome usually so it's no problem.

I never had any trouble with the crowd, but while I was in public I always found it fun to hear the clapping rain wink.gif

Yeah, for a perfect example of this, listen to any live album. One of the best examples of this is Rock in Rio, the live Maiden album. The clapping always goes out of time. A lot of it could be due to the distance that the sound is travelling and things like that. But it always annoys me. Apparently Steve Harris got really annoyed when he listened to the recordings of Rock in Rio that he asked for a lot of the clapping to be mixed out, or something like that ! wink.gif

Haha, I noticed this too - many many times! I really don't have the answer. Sometimes it's like they fall out of rhythm but - synchronized! biggrin.gif And then they keep clapping out of rhythm but in rhythm with themselves.

Sometimes you can't blame them, maybe they're just too tired from mosh pits or drunk biggrin.gif
Sometimes they just don't have "it" biggrin.gif
