GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Rammstein Style Collab

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 11 2016, 08:46 PM

Hello friends! Welcome to the new GMC Collab!

Before we start, I'd like to share the final video of the previous collab in the case you've missed it: https://youtu.be/q9C9IYnYrZg

Isn't it awesome??? You can be part of the next one right now!

This time I've recorded a backing track in the style of Rammstein and as we've done in the previous collabs, this one will also include vocals and Kristofer Dahl (GMC Founder) has already lyrics and a raw demo!

Check it out here:  kris_vox_mix_Rammstein_collab.mp3 ( 3.78MB ) : 277

Lyrics:

CHORUS
Diese Shule ist so toll
(This school is such fun)

Mein Gitar spielt das Rock ’n Roll
(My guitar plays rock ’n roll)

Für alle Leute und jeden Tag
(For all students and every day)

Diese Shule ist mein alter jag
(This school is my alter ego)

VERSE
Im Abend ein Arpeggio spielen
(Play an arpeggio in the evening)

Die Medchen will von Glück da schreien:
(Girls will scream of joy:)

“Ich will einfach ein Schredder haben
(“I only want a shredder)

Und dan mich in die Nabel
(Fiddle me in my belly button)

Pill mich mit deine Schnabel”
(with your trunk”)

OUTRO
Mit mein Schnabel in dein Nabel
(with my trunk in your belly button)

We need your guitar solos, arrangements, chords, bass guitar, backing vocals or whatever you would like to add to this one!

Backing track:  Rammstein_Collab_Backing.mp3 ( 3.4MB ) : 275

Jamtrack:  Rammstein_Jamtrack.mp3 ( 9.42MB ) : 254

Tempo: 85bpm

Chord progression & Scale choices:

Chorus: Dm - Am - F - C

Verse: (Dm - Am - F - C) x 2
(Am - F - C - Dm) x 2

Outro: Riff in D Blues Scale

In order to keep things simple, you can use A minor scale to solo over this one. (For more advanced players, you can see it as D dorian over Intro and Verse and A aeolian over Chorus).

However, everything will sound better if you focus on notes from the chords while creating melodies. So a good exercise would be to work on 1 part at a time and play only chord tones at first. Then, gradually add other notes from the scale as passing notes. Does this sound difficult? Send me a PM and I'll guide you.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Over the outro you can use D blues scale:

Check the tabs:  Rammstein_for_Beginners.pdf ( 302.39K ) : 289

IF YOU NEED HELP TO USE ALL THIS INFO LET ME KNOW! I'M HERE TO GUIDE YOU.

IMPORTANT INFO About files required:

In order to make the things easier for compiling takes and mixing I need that each participant shares 3 files:

- Audio file with the mix of the backing and your guitar.
- Audio file only with your guitar (If possible this audio should have the same length than the mix version)
- Video of you playing the solo, and if it's not possible a picture. (Mp4 format if it's possible)

The best way to share this is compressing in a zip file to be downloaded from here or using sharing service as dropbox, wetransfer, and copying the link here.

If you decide to share your files using soundcloud please remember to "allow downloads".

Thanks!

Awesome! So gonna be a part of this biggrin.gif

I hope you don't mind, but I feel compelled to correct those German lyrics smile.gif

Here's how I would write it:

Diese Schule ist so toll
Meine Gitarre spielt Rock'n'Roll
Für alle Leute und jeden Tag

Diese Schule ist von meinem Schlag
(Now you used "jag" here which doesn't translate to what you want but has in itself only a single meaning, being a shortened (slang) version of "ich jage" which means "I hunt". Considering you wanted to talk about your alter ego, I propose the phrase "Diese Schule ist von meinem Schlag" which means something like "This school is of my kind". "vom gleichen Schlag" translates to "to be cast in the same mold" or "to be tarred with the same brush". Maybe that's an acceptable change for you? smile.gif )

Am Abend ein Arpeggio spielen
Die Mädchen werden voll Glück schreien:
"Ich will einfach einen Shredder haben
...
...

I'm not sure what to do about the last two lines. I get the general idea but in the current version it doesn't make sense in German smile.gif
To make a better version I need to know what exactly you mean with "trunk". I guess it's a word play and is certainly meant to have a vulgar connotation here but I'd rather ask because I'm not an English native speaker. I'm sure there are many funny things we can do with those two lines biggrin.gif

I think this one has some great potential - as the backing track does not contain anything complex and is open for pretty much any type of idea. Give it a shot. Even if you are a complete beginner! We will give you suggestions along the way (that's the best and fastest way to improve!) Please remember you are here to learn, not to deliver something perfect/amazing.

You are aware I have a professor's degree in Antique German? These lyrics represent how German would be, if completely unaltered by modern civilisation. So you could say my lyrics represent German in its purest form.

This sounds good and I have not got any complaints. Your left hand seem really relaxed which is excellent for performance.

If you want to take this to the next level from a songwriting perspective, here are two suggestions:

* Have much much longer pauses/silences between your phrases, this usually forces people to get more melodic (and it is also more difficult than jamming away).

* Even better: jam to the backing with vocals. If you can find good melodies that work with the vocals, they are almsot guaranteed to be featured in the final mix.

Hello guys,

I have a question. Why is it d dorian?

Because there is no G chords in it.

Greetz tim

Or is it because the c chords is the raised 6th of d?

No. Im sorry. That would be B

Hey Tim, it can be seen as D Dorian because all the Chords used are from the C scale (C Maj, D min, E min, F Maj, G Maj, A min, B Dim) but because we are using D min as the root for the song it becomes D Dorian as the 2nd Mode of the C Major Scale. C Ionian, D Dorian, E Phrygian, F Lydian, G Mixolydian, A Aolian, B Locrian.
Hope that helps explain it!
biggrin.gif

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 14 2016, 02:15 PM

Hi Tim,

SJ post is right however I understand that you could feel a bit confused since the progression could be part of both D minor or D dorian. At first sight I also though that this was in D minor however when I've started jamming with D minor I noted that there was something that didn't work.

My ear was the "judge" saying that the minor 6th of D minor didn't sound cool while the major 6th sounded better. Try it by yourself.

When playing the progression I've noted that the overall feeling of the verse is in C major, and the fact that the chorus is in A minor makes everything sound more related to C major (or D Dorian), instead of D minor.

There are different levels of modal analysis. We can see a progression as a whole, or we can see each chord as an entity and refer to a mode that is being played over it. At the same time, if we focus on chord tones, all the other notes from the chromatic scale can be used as tensions and passing notes.

Let me know if this clarifies a bit everything.

Hey friends! Feel free to start sharing your only guitar takes in order to let me give shape to the song/mix.

Posted by: yoncopin Oct 23 2016, 09:58 PM

This is my first collab, Gab encouraged me to join in... so... here's my first take. I could probably tighten up the playing and didn't record a video, so I'll have to re-record, but wanted to see what everyone thought first.

Hey yoncopin! I'm happy to find your take here! It sounds killer!! This is the type of stuff that we need to build the song!

Please go for the final version and remember to share the only guitar file to let me mix it.

Thanks a lot!! smile.gif

Posted by: yoncopin Oct 26 2016, 02:47 AM

I re-recorded everything with video and attached the files here. The audio and video files are the length of the mix, so my part begins at about 0:08 seconds in. I included a processed wet guitar using the 5150 from my Helix and also the dry guitar if you wanted to mix it with something else or add effects. I can also re-amp it to something different here if you'd like too.

Just working on some ideas with the Vocal track. Messing around before I cut a vid along with a Long Track jamming for fun.

*Edit : Wife left for a bit so I listened and rebalanced with monitors instead of Headphones. Not sure which is best balance-wise and I'm just practicing. It's a pretty subtle change. My headphones simple accentuate the guitar part more and I have to lower when mixing it with them.

About the mix, I don't notice big differences, just the level of your guitar. In my monitors, I prefer the headphones version.

We can wait a bit for some takes coming but not too much. Who is planning to share a take?

Posted by: GeneT95 Nov 3 2016, 12:17 AM

Ah. You beat me by a few hours although my time zone is a fair bit different than GMC standard. I'm 5 hours shy of GMC time. Here is one of my takes. Doing a jam to the long track for fun next. Testing a new video taking setup tonight.

One question. Is it easier for you to pull the vid from Youtube or have a vid via Dropbox?

Ah well. If you need it. Here is the link to the guitar only video without backing in Dropbox. It has my imperfect volume adjustment added that I did in Live to gel better with the backing track.

Posted by: GeneT95 Nov 3 2016, 02:34 AM

Messing around with a Long Take using the backing track. Playing around with some motif's which are all similar with some repeating parts. The beginning is essentially the same as the short version.

I didn't get the video sync well on the Youtube version but did a little better on the guitar only, no backing, dropbox version if Gab thinks any parts are usable.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17581381/RammLongTakeGOnly.mp4

I did create a new version of the whole take with backing to try and fix the syncing issue. I dropped it here, which is a bit higher res.

Also, I think that this collabs are great for students who want to get into songwriting and arranging. I know that many GMCers don't join because they don't feel good enough or because they are shy. I hope that they understand soon that everybody at every level is welcome here.
