There is just no possible way we are the only intelligent life out there.

Yes, it is amazing. Great video smile.gif

Posted by: Gitarrero Jan 28 2010, 10:26 PM

Fantastic. I knew just how huge the universe must be, but I have to admit, viewing this video showed me how I underestimated the size of the universe, especially regarding the distance in light years.
Thanks a lot for sharing!

I so want that for a screensaver.

Posted by: Fran Jan 28 2010, 11:19 PM

Really cool animation, I wonder how they manage to map the universe that way!

Posted by: Rik Veldhuizen Jan 28 2010, 11:23 PM

wow, nice to see this in perspective... well, everything in perspective really. So the question really is, who will find who first

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Jan 28 2010, 11:28 PM

I'm not sure if we are every going to understand more deeply the universe around us...I think its beyond us...

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Jan 29 2010, 01:11 AM

We are with them all the time! smile.gif

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Jan 29 2010, 02:44 AM

EDIT: Alright, that was just stupid.

Thanks for sharing this mate.. I just cant get enough of it.. This is has always been and will always be my favourite topic ... smile.gif

Anyone mind writing how many 0's that is?

21. or what do you mean?

for example gravity is just a thoery.

Its a theory, but it describes reality. At least there is no evidence that the theory of gravity is wrong.

Posted by: jstcrsn Jan 29 2010, 03:41 AM

sorry but gravity on earth is a law, gravity from the sun that keeps the earth orbiting is a law .- evolution is a theory smile.gif

Dont agree with you either...there is no thing as a Law (in the sense you use it), as long as you are inside(!) a game you cant directly see what the laws are. You just can assume what the laws are by making theories and proving them by experiments. Thats the way science works. All experiments show that the theory of gravitation as described by Einstein in the general relativity is right.

By the way: Some things are called "Laws", but thats misleading. Thats the way i understand physics after 5 semester at university.

EDIT: Here an extract from wiki:

QUOTE
Modern physics describes gravitation using the general theory of relativity, in which gravitation is a consequence of the curvature of spacetime which governs the motion of inertial objects. The simpler Newton's law of universal gravitation provides an accurate approximation for most calculations.

Look at the last sentece, here you can see that Reality is for example not as easy as it was described by Newtons LAW. Its just an approximation. That means it works, but not for all cases. So there are experiments that you cant explain by Newtons LAW, so you need General Relativity Theory.

Wow. A breathtaking perspective.

Great find Ben!!
I love stuff like this!!

Here's another way of putting a perspective on things:-

so if gravity is not a law what keeps the earth rotatinr around the sun---and therefore maintain life on earth
i might be wrong but isn't a law someting that can't be changed ,like 2 plus 2 is 4 , or will this ever change?

Posted by: Sentenced Jan 29 2010, 02:20 PM

Ok, i found something to solve our Problem with laws and theories...from wiki:

QUOTE
Simply stated, while a law notes that something happens, a theory explains why and how something happens.

So you can call the rotating around the sun a law, because you can observe it every day. If that is your intention than you can use the word law. I am fine with that. Maybe i misunderstood you.

EDIT: My point is: Laws can be completely false, thats why i stumble over the word "law". Look for example for "Dulong–Petit law", its total crap for low temperatures, completely wrong. But it works for normal temperatures quite well. You have to consider this when talking about laws.

Haha. My math deserted me late last night, it seems. I read it as x*10^21 for some reason.

Anyway, it's still a lot.

thanks for sharing!

very cool!

Yeah, I agree, I don't think there's any chance that we are the only intelligence in the universe...

It's just that it's hard for our minds to comprehend the size of the universe

fiar enough smile.gif
my diffinition of a law is something that cannot be changed by new information--- 2 plus 2 = 4
no new info can change this outcome without changing the dynamics of the question
would this diffine a law accurately?
and if it could be changed i would not consider it a law

Posted by: Sentenced Jan 30 2010, 02:58 AM

@Victor

Black holes are described quite well by general relativity...but this theory isnt known by most people because its complicated math far beyond school level.

@jstcrsn

Like i said several times: There are Laws wich fail at some point. They predict you an outcome which doesnt correspond to reality, talking math: Your law says 10, and your experiment 34. Know what i mean?

But i think this discussion isnt leading somewhere.

What is the difference between a physicist, an engineer, and a mathematician?

If an engineer walks into a room and sees a fire in the middle and a bucket of water in the corner, he takes the bucket of water and pours it on the fire and puts it out.

If a physicist walks into a room and sees a fire in the middle and a bucket of water in the corner, he takes the bucket of water and pours it eloquently around the fire and lets the fire put itself out.

If a mathematician walks into a room and sees a fire in the middle and a bucket of water in the corner, he convinces himself there is a solution and leaves
