finger position, finger position on frets 15 through 22

Once i get to the 15th fret or higher my hand often cramps because i'm trying to play the same way i would on the other frets.maybe this is a lame question. What I do is I play a group that is like this: --18-20-22-- normally, but since I have trouble with: --19-20-22-- or --19-21-22--. I play these patterns using two fingers that are non adjacent (1 and 3, or 2 and 4), and slide the half step interval like this; --19/20-22-- or --19-21/22--. This will seem difficult at first and you must really know your scale patterns very well, but its the only solution I have found for "finger-sausage-itis" and the upper fretboard! I will usually not use the little finger quite as much when going high up - because of the problem you mention. Only when dealing with larger intervalls.
