Swapping about to keep it fresh.

Currently putting the blues improv in second priority and doing it for 15 minutes at the end of each session due to not having many ideas and/or licks in my head. Concentrating now on the lesson for REC which was only a casual thing until now.

To try to build my licks for improvising we are studying the following lesson:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/30-Beginner-Blues-Riffs/

As a secondary lesson when extra time is available we are looking at this lesson:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/SRV-Chordal-Licks/

When the 30 beginners licks is complete we will work on the SRV-Chordal licks as the main lesson and pick a supplementary lesson to practise when time allows working towards it being the main lesson when the SRV chordal lesson is complete.

Practise 12 bar bass rhythm to improve timing, 36-48 bars per evening, record and post in main mentoring thread once per week for Gab to critique. A D A A D D A A E D A A

At the end of session, time allowing, practise dominant 7 chords with lead fills trying to follow the chords and use suitable scale for each. A7 (A major pent), D7 (modified minor pent), E7 (modifed minor pent or arpeggio). See above for further info.

When time allows or if not "feeling" the session, try to catch up with Todd's Quick Licks and also move forward in Bootcamp.

No doubt there will be transitional technique lessons when the main lesson shows a weakness. These will be added as and when Gab feels I need to concentrate on a particular technique..

Currently working on https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/SRV-Chordal-Licks/ as discussed due to 30 riffs being a bit too MONSTER and some other issues.

REHABILITATION WORK

Warm up work: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Triplets-Exercise/

Main lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/SlowBluesinAMinor/

Casual lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/picnic-panic/

Work on ideas for my song idea.

Lyrics:

Today has nearly gone and
Tomorrow’s nearly come,
Yesterday seems oh so long ago.

Days just disappear and turn into a year
Suddenly it’s time to say goodbye,
Enjoy each other and the time you have now
Till the day comes when you’re gonna have to cry

No matter what I try
My life is flashing by,
I just can’t seem to make it go slow.

Days just disappear and turn into a year
Suddenly it’s time to say goodbye,
Enjoy each other and the time you have now
Till the day comes when you’re gonna have to cry

Too much stuff to do
Not enough time with you,
Find time to be happy, not sad.

Days just disappear and turn into a year
Suddenly it’s time to say goodbye,
Enjoy each other and the time you have now
Till the day comes when you’re gonna have to cry

Before our time is done
We should try and have more fun,
Live for now not wish that we had.

Days just disappear and turn into a year
Suddenly it’s time to say goodbye,
Enjoy each other and the time you have now
Till the day comes when you’re gonna have to cry
Till the day comes when you’re gonna have to cry
Till the day comes when you’re gonna have to cry

I originally had a kind of Achey Breaky Heart groove in my head.

Now I'm thinking a kind of Hurt Myself by Johnny Cash vibe.

I guess over time we could try both. It's only for fun and experience.

Time to get back into bootcamp, injury much better, still need strength work, can lift a guitar above shoulder with straight right arm, can barely lift with left.

New way to practise on test.

Split lesson up into small chunks and work on each chunk for 5-10 minutes then leave it and move to the next. As you become more proficient at some of the chunks, start tying them together and work on the groups of chunks for 5-10 minutes until you can work on the whole thing for 5-10 minutes. If you find problem areas that aren't improving as quick as the rest when playing the whole thing, isolate them and work on them individually for 5-10 minutes before practising the whole thing.

Not all 5-10minute bursts will yield the same results, but after 5-10 minutes of actual practise, nothing seems to get any better at that time, leave it alone and let your mind work its magic until tomorrow.

This is based on this comment that I came across on Facebook.

"One other tip I can share is how the mind learns.
Practice a little and be focused on strengthening what ever topic your hacking at. Especially if your developing muscle memory - where your fingers know where to go with barely a grunt of a thought in toe head.
Be repetitious - but stop pushing after 5 min or so. Any more is wasting your time.
Even if your technique / memory seem to improve with 30 min or more effort in a session… your mind will not appreciate it. That night when you sleep - the head reorganizes the pathways based on the first 5 min. That’s it! So practice often, but short sessions when your getting off the ground and building technique / or training your visual maps of the fretboard.
You will be amazed. It feels like you haven’t done enough - but I assure you - you have. Kinda like eating and not feeling full, but truth is your stomach is, and to continue is just empty calories.
There is a double edge to this tho. If you skip a day, two tops, your efforts regress - the paths you’ve trained your head with new materials or skills hasn’t cemented in, and it will degrade. Only when it’s at a fluent level without effort and a slightest whimsical thought is all that’s needed to do complex things is where you can relax and know you can’t skip a week or more and not lose the technique you built up.
Most don’t know this trick - and again - took me easily 25 years - but the last 5 I’ve been doing some amazing skill building following this method of training my mind… and learning to work with how the mind learns, not against it.
It’s like shaking a snow globe…. Takes a few seconds to get all that jazz floating in circles - but takes hours to see it all settle in place. No value over shaking the globe once everything is already up and off the ground.
"

This system, frees up a little time for practising improv/composition/theory study and anything else musically that you're working on. It also helps to stop the brain from stagnating from over doing the same thing for an hour.

UPDATE: I'm finding this method great for initially learning a piece, getting the licks into your fingers and grouping them together. Once you have the piece in your fingers, you need to spend time to practise the entire piece. Learning and practising aren't quite the same.

What I do, is as I bump up the BPM , I discover licks that fall apart at the new speed, I isolate them and do the 5-10 on the problematic licks then come back to it tomorrow.
