GMC Forum _ Wiki Writers _ New Wiki Articles Needed!

Posted by: Fran Aug 27 2008, 12:17 AM

Hello all! Your help is needed!

Working on our wiki I find lots of entries that need to be written daily, so I'm making a list and posting it here for anyone willing to lend a hand, feel free to choose any of them and create the wiki article!.

So go ahead! just do what you can, even if it's just a simple entry, that will do, you or someone else can complete it later on, that's the spirit of a wiki. Or just write whatever entry that doesn't exist you may think of! Or make a post here with your entries suggestions.

Hope this helps the ones who need a bit of inspiration to start writing. Once you make 5 quality articles you can qualify to obtain a wiki:writer badge too cool.gif

Update as of 3rd of October 2008: brand new auto-updating link to ALL needed articles:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Wantedpages&limit=500&offset=0

Thanks for your help! If everyone made just one entry per week we could have hundreds of new entries per month! It's easy, takes no time, and everyone will benefit. Join the Guitar wiki... NOW!

I claim Boss and Nevermore and ive begun nevermore tonight ill pm you when its done! and send it to you for suggestions! please don't post my first version they are never as good as later versions smile.gif

Posted by: ZakkWylde Aug 27 2008, 11:04 PM

Maybe we can make this into a wiki competition round 2, that would guarantee a high quality standard and more than enough new entries...

Posted by: Smikey2006 Aug 27 2008, 11:05 PM

Yes.. and therefore im getting and early start! smile.gif

Posted by: Fran Aug 28 2008, 01:20 AM

Hey! nice to see you guys are interested smile.gif

Just do the entries that are more appealing to your liking, and drop me aline or post here when they are done so I can mark them as "done" in the list up there.

And remember that there are many more entries you can write about!, so if you think of some entry which doesn't exist I suggest you post them in this thread and I'll add them to the list of "needed entries" in the first post. Of course you can just create the entry and post a new thread commenting about it in the forum as usual, etc.

Anything that helps our guitar wiki grow is fine! wink.gif

There are soo many possible bands to write about.. we could probably have a list there on its own! my Nevemore Article is about half finished, im using the same structure as my other band articles (see firewind) but if there is a prefered template for bands let me know!

Yup there are loads of bands, so far I'm focusing on the ones that have some albums already reviewed in our wiki as far as this list of suggested entries is concerned. Of course any new entry not featured in the list will be more than welcome!

There's no band template, I could create one, but having written quite a few band wikis myself I believe its best to leave this task free to the creativity of the author, as some bands have such a long/short/complicated/special history behind that the possible templates could be so different. Having said that, if you guys still feel the need for a template I'll arrange it, no problem!

Looking forward to your entries guys smile.gif

Just discovered an awesome Wiki feature that will sure help us find needed entries, here you have a complete list of ALL needed articles in the wiki so far. They are the entries which already have links to them although no one has yet created them.

Over 200 to choose, and growing. All kind of stuff. Serve yourselves!

Wikipedia isn't a great source. For a great article you should really reference several different sources and write the entry in your style to get over the important points.

Posted by: Fran Oct 22 2008, 02:41 PM

Cool Kaznie, I created the entry Humbuckers and linked it to your previous article smile.gif

Sometimes this happens when an article already exists but it is linked from a different name, for example we could have an article about ACDC, and then someone writes it as AC/DC and links it, and the wiki thinks it's a different article when we know it's the same.

You are welcome to create an entry to redirect the article or just let me know and I'll do it smile.gif

Keep making nice articles guys smile.gif

Sure you can see what the wikipedia tells about Judas Priest, and also tell what you know, and maybe surf the web a bit and find some info from different sources, and then make your own article.

Remember that creating new entries is really important, so even if the entry you make is short it's a good start for you or others to complete it later.

looking forward to your entry Jer, and thanks for your help cool.gif

Nice!, see this is what we need, entries, entries entries!!

I added a picture and the "category" of the article (which is bands), take a look all I did was adding a couple simple code lines:

First line is needed for the wiki to categorize the article within the rest of the band articles, for easier browsing. The second line is the code to add a picture, where jpriest.jpg is the name of the file I just uploaded using the "upload file" button at the bottom of the wiki page.

Thanks Jer, keep them coming wink.gif

Posted by: jer Oct 22 2008, 03:12 PM

I uploaded a more recent picture.

I cannot find your code to edit it though....

Oh just click on the "edit" button at the top right corner of the page, then you'll see what you've written as wella s those two lines at the top. Just replace the name of the file with the name of the file you just uploaded.

Shall you have any problem let me know!

Posted by: jer Oct 22 2008, 03:19 PM

yep. I did hit edit.

I dont see what you added.

Posted by: Fran Oct 22 2008, 03:24 PM

When you hit edit you should see all this: (this is a direct copy and paste from the whole article), you see the first two lines are the ones I added (In bold).

You should be able to see it too!

Judas Priest
Judas Priest hail from Birmingham England. Formed in 1968, they remain one of the most influential bands in heavy metal.

Many say it was "Priest" that defined the "twin guitar attack" in heavy metal. Emplying not one but two proficient lead players. Similar to their early influences like the band Wishbone Ash.

Judas Priest were one of the first band sto be labeled as Heavy Metal. It was Priest that brought about the later imitated leather and chains look.

Many current and past metal bands credit Judas Priest as a major influence.

They have 18 albums to their credit.

Their debut album Rocka Rolla being released in 1974 and their latest, Nostradamus released in 2008.

Their most commercially sucessful era was from 1980 thru 1991. Though the band has never stopped. Even after heavy metal legend Rob Halford quit the band in May of 1992, the band forged onwards. Discovering the incomperable vocal abilities of one Tim Owens in 1996. This event inspired the box office film "Rockstar" starring Mark Wahlberg. Halford would eventually return to the fold in 2003.

Their most controversial moment was court case involving 2 teenagers and a suicide pact. The case was dismissed in 1990. The band was found not guilty of using subliminal messages in their cover of Spooky Tooth song "Better By You, Better Than Me"

Judas Priest has completed many tours of the globe. Playing the largest festivals, full arena, and smaller clubs.

In February 2009, Judas Priest continue their tour when they bring their 'Priest Feast' for arena dates with support from guests Megadeth and Testament.

The band is still going strong after nearly 40 years. Defending the heavy metal faith again and again.

Ok I see what was happening!!

You are editing the SECTION, because you are clicking on the EDIT button IN the article wink.gif

The "edit" button you need to click is NOt that one, but the one at the top right corner of the page, then you'll see the whole code of the page, not just the section.

You create a section in an article when you put a word between theses symbols:
Words here blah blah
That way you create different parts within the article, which afterwards appear in a nice index box.

By the way I changed the name of the pic for you, but see if you find the right button now smile.gif

For Schecter there is a page but it is titled "Schecter Guitar Research". Maybe the name should be changed.

Oh my sad.gif what a shame!!
Always save your progress before leaving the page... well you've learnt it the hard way. When I write long articles I do it on a plain .txt file, then copy and paste to the wiki, save, and then add the needed pictures and links.

Hope it doesn't happen again... once you write a cuple wikis you'll see that it's a piece of cake.

Try adding the main parts of the article as sections, such as this:

Introduction
blah blah
blah blah

History
blah blah
blah blah

Discography
blah blah
blah blah

Band Members
blah blah
blah blah

Related GMC lessons
blah blah
blah blah

Etc. etc, just an idea, make the sections you need/wish, dependeing on teh subject. You'll see that it generates a nice index chart when you click "save page".
Good luck!

Cool Jer! Funny you should make this entry as I've been listening to that song a lot lately, actually surfed those couple vids yesterday too!

I notice you mention Ozzy Osbourne in the article, a good thing to do when mentioning other famous artists & stuff is to put them inside this Ozzy Osbourne brackets. You can do that when you write any word which you think deserves it's own entry, such as "fender", "gibson", "humbucker", etc. There's a handy button that automatically does it to the selected text.

That way the wiki understands that as a internal link, and you could click on the name afterwards and navigate to the corresponding article. If it doesn't exist then the link is added anyway, and the entry becomes part of our "suggested" entries.

As for the external links, such as those couple youtube videos, a nice way to do it is using the external link feature, like this:

Promo Video for Holy Diver

That way what you will see is Promo Video for Holy Diver as a clickable link, which looks nicer. Notice how it all goes in brackets, then write the link, then leave a space, then write the text that will become the link. Piece of cake.

Last but not least, creating sections as I suggested in my previous post is a must to create a quality article, you should give it a try when you write a longer one.

Take a look at our wiki help post, the basics are covered there:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=9117

To sum up: good job Jer!, if you follow my previous ideas in your next articles you'll be a wiki expert in no time wink.gif

I'll probably write a wiki on Kirk Hammett soon. smile.gif

gotcha. I didnt know if there had to be an article already done to link it to.

Sections: Right, I saw that. For an album I didnt know what would apply. Are there recommended sections for each category of entry? I saw the ones for band. Are there album ones?

Thanks!

I made some changes, let me know if they are ok.

I also created an entry for "Chorus" - http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Chorus

Entries like this are pretty minimalistic. Not a lot of use for pics or sections. Though feedback is welcome.

There's a Kirk Hammett article already! But maybe you could add some info to it? Or maybe write about another band/guitarist?

Edit: Oh I just saw that Kirk Hammet (with just one "t") appeared in the list of needed wikis!, that probably mislead you. Solved now!. Still if you are willing to write an article there are plenty to choose from, or just invent your own wink.gif

I answered in your other thread about the album template, there you have a couple useful album/gear templates cool.gif
As for the changes, nice! you are getting the hang of the wiki real fast. One more thing: if you wish to make two sepparate lines, use this command: <br>

That way you can make lists like this.

01. Number of the beast <br>
02. Only the good die young <br>
03. Iron Maiden <br>

If you don't write the <br> after each line, the above would show like this:
01. Number of the beast 02. Only the good die young 03. Iron Maiden

Unless you left a blank line in between each line, which wouldn't look good either. Give it a try it's easier to see how it works than explaining it tongue.gif

Solved now.
One of them was Eddie and the other Edie (with just one "d"). This happens when someone creates a link to a misspelled word, the wiki obviously doesn't know about spelling and accepts whatever internal link we create.

Posted by: kaznie_NL Oct 22 2008, 07:31 PM

the eddie van halen wki is already made! it's Eddie Van Halen!

Thanks Kaz, it seems that the wiki suggested entries also differenciate between capital letters too.
Solved now =)

I'll narrow the list down later in search of more of this cases. They are just a few though, and easy to spot: misspelled links created by wikiers most of the time (things like a missing letter or capital letter).

I did one on Boss.

(in case anyone is updating the "needed list" happy.gif )

I'll be doing these next: JACKSON, DIO, RONNIE JAMES DIO

Question, Do we really need an entry for "Singer"?

Posted by: Fran Dec 9 2008, 10:39 PM

Good thing about this list is that it's semi-intelligent! It updates itself!, but also contains a few curious entries.
There must be something for everyone to choose smile.gif

Edit: By the way, if you notice a needed entry that appears twice, just do one of them and I'll then have the other one moved so that they both link to the same entry. Damn that was hard to explain writing laugh.gif
