What's a good but not too expensive mic for recording guitar? And for Toneport/podfarm users, do I need anything kind of a preamp or will the Toneport suffice?

Budget is $100 US or less.

cheers

Shure SM57 is industry standard, but if you don't have enough for that, Shure PG57 can do the job as well.

Toneport GX doesn't have mic preamp, but UX1, UX2 have mic preamps. Just plug the mic into XLR input on the Toneport, and set modeling in POD Farm.

If you buy a Shure SM57 and it sounds awful you know it's not the mic.

Just a question tho.. Do you plan to mic a cab/amp, and if so - what is it that you plan to record with the mic?

Yes, to mic my homebrew tube amp thru my homebrew 4x12. What do I plan to record? Do you mean type of instrument or type of music?

If you get Shure Sm57, you can use it to record vocals too. It has a great frequency response to record vocals.
