hello I have had my eyes sent on this half stack since I have been saving up for one and this will be my first one. It seems affordable and was wanted to know if it was a good amp

Not really a good amp; it's not even a Marshall! Marshall had no solid state technology so they bought a company that was building Marshall SS fakes and put the real marshall logo on those amps...

For a few bucks more you could get a Peavy Valveking all-tube combo so why bother with the fizzy ss marshalls?

From what I've heard myself and heard from other people it's not a good amp. But as always, there are people who love it. Imho you pay for the Marshall name but don't get a "real" marshall. I'd say don't buy it without comparing it to quite a few other amps. If you still like it after comparing it to other amps (if possible on different days) go ahead and buy it.

can you please give me a link to the Peavy Valveking you are mentioning, I checked guitar centers website and the only one there was for nearly 1000 dollars, which is way too much

Guitar center shows a Valveking Halfstack and a 2x12 combo...

But there is also a 1x12 version of the Valveking which costs ~450$

I had this amp for about a year. The only reason I would buy it is if you intend to play in a band regularly. For that, it was awesome, mine sounded much better loud that my friend's combo amps. I have no regrets buying it, and mine didn't give me any trouble. Warning....it's LOUD! I could blow away the drummer with both volumes's on half (so, really 1/4).

The only reason I sold it is because it's a total pain the butt to lug it around, and I couldn't afford to buy a small practice amp if I kept it.

EDIT: I'm talking about the Marshall mg half stack in this post. (Actually I owned both at one point LOL, and the peavey 112 valveking couldn't keep up to my drummer fyi)

thanks for the feedback, it is good to hear that it is for band practice as I do play in one and own a separate practice amp

I am going to try it out this weekend but if possible can someone recommend me more stacks in this price range to check out?

Why does it have to be a stack anyways?!? Sure they look cool but what's the point in a cool looking amp?

It's tone before looks, and a 500$ stack will never sound like a real 3000$ Tube stack...

Tell uy your guitar and music styles and we will recommend you some amps!

Honestly? In that price range all you can barely get a proper 4x12 cab let alone a whole head. So either save up more money (I guess you could get a proper halfstack for like 1000$ used in the us) or go for something smaller.

...Eventually a Krank Rev. Jr would be something for you. I've ordered one yesterday for myself wink.gif But I'm not sure if it is loud enough to play with a band. But I think is. It's at least theoretically more than half as loud as a 100 Watt head. wink.gif

Zakk, You know half stacks make cool furniture too!

well It doesn't need to be a stack, but I always that whose would be better for live/band playing, so anything loud enough would be good : )

my band plays stuff like Slayer/Iron Maiden/Megadeth stuff, but the tone I like is a more thrash/heavy tone like the Metallica's self titled album (the Black Album), I will probably get a distortion pedal if necessary

I also play leads reminiscent of Dave Mustaine and Dave Murray, tone wise more Murray-like, but on the bridge pickup, so I need an amp that's good with that stuff

600 bucks is unfortunately the limit because I need an amp suitable for playing shows soon since I've been borrowing up until now

Yeah I agree, but if he's only got $500 to spend and wants to play in a band. He's gonna have to go solid state. It's a good stepper amp, and I sold mine for $50 more than I paid a year later. So it's a pretty safe bet.

I think he could get a used tube combo which would be loud enough for 600$. Which might be the better choice.

Yeah, if he could get a used Peavey Valveking 212, he'll be better off. The mg isn't bad though, I just ran pedals into it anyways.

4x12 cab is too big for any club gig, it is only intended for big stages. Unless you are planning to play on medium to large venues, you don't really need it IMO. I suggest you get yourself a nice 2x12 hybrid amp (tube in preamp), and try it like that. It will be a lot more efficient.

I recommend:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ValveK112/

and

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Spider3-150/

Peavey is all tube so it will have a more pleasant sound, but Spider is great for gigs as well, it's pretty loud and it can serve a purpose.

I liked my 112 valveking, but it couldn't keep up to a drummer, my volume was always on 9-10 and all it would do is horrible squeeling.

It says 50W but it sure didn't act like it (even with the texture turned to A/B for the full 50W). The valveking has that texture knob which cuts your power down to 25W if you set it to class A.

I don't know what you have for a setup, but if you use a PA system and mic all the instruments, then the 112 would be fine for you. Otherwise grab a used 212.

If it's really just the cab he could buy an extension cabinet. Also there are more and less sensitive speakers. For example, an Eminence Wizard will give you 103 db at one meter distance at one watt. With a delta demon you'll only get 96.9 db at one watt. Which would result (if I got it right biggrin.gif) in a one watt amp connected to the wizard being louder than a 50 watt amp connected to the delta demon! In practice it's a bit different though.

Yeah that could be, cuz my Mesa is 10x louder than the Valveking was. Maybe just a speaker upgrade would do it.

The Valveking combos have terrible speakers while the amp itself is great for the price! You can buy a 1x12 combo and a really good speaker and swap the old one and voila: Great Tube Amp>>SS halfstack

Hear's my 2 cents. I've owned many combo's and a couple of Marshall full stacks. In fact that's what I use currently.

Many people say a 4x12 is to big for a club setting. That's total bs in my opinion. The sound produced by a 4x12 closed back cab cannot even be compaired to a 2x12 open backed combo. Focused, ballsy, and punchy are just a few of the words describing a 4x12.

Now, I'm guessing that your considering the Marshall MG 100dfx with a 4x12 cab for both price and the fact that just about every band you mentioned used Marshall for their back line. Many people with argue with me but Marshall is the king of rock and roll back lines. Still to this day it's the standard. It just looks great. Period!! Even people who don't know a thing about amps recognize the Marshall logo. That's because any concert they ever been to they see Marshall stacks in the back line.

However, keep in mind the MG series is not the Marshalls that true Marshall lovers play. It's their entry level line and they don't sound like any good tube Marshall will sound. Does that mean there bad. That's for each individual player to figure out. The 4x12 cab that matches the MG head is also not the same. Speakers and cab construction are not the same quality as Marshall's famous 1960 lead cabinets.

If your on a budget and you must have the Marshall half stack look I say go for it as you will always be able to sell it for 2/3's of what you paid for it. If you can wait and save up some more money then used Marshall's like a JCM 2000 DSL can be had for $600 to $800 dollars. Used 1960 cabs will run $500 to $650 dollars.

Bottom line solid state verses tubes. Don't be fooled into thinking a low end tube amp will sound much better that a solid state amp. It's just not true. However, Marshall, Mesa Boogie, Engl etc. all have great tube amps but your not going to get one too cheap. The old saying really stands true you generally get what you pay for.

Cheers,
tommyboy
