Not even close man! The squire would be like a Ford car, nice and affordable but no real frills. The standard on the other hand is more like a Porsche, it's THE top Strat more or less and will blow you away with its tone and playability.

The difference between a Squier and a "Standard" Strat is immense - don't let the "standard" part of the name fool you.

I jumped from a cheap SX strat clone (roughly the same quality as a Squier) to a Highway 1 and never looked back.

That said, I found that upgrading my amp yielded an even more noticeable boost in quality. My SX sounds better when hooked up to my Frontman 25 than my Fender sounds hooked up to my el-cheapo SX amp. Surprised me a little, but makes sense when you think about it. I can only imagine how much better it would sound through a really good amp (the Frontman isn't awful, but it isn't great either).

Hey Colin.

While reading your post, I almost had to chuckle because a few months ago I was in your exact Same Situtation, Trying to decide If I should Upgrade from the Squier Strat. So I can tell you stuff based on my own Personal experiences.

Anyways I read that you also have the Frontman 15 amp, Which I'm guessing came in the Squier Strat pack Which was the First Guitar setup I had.

So to tell you the Truth, Yes the Fender Standard Strat (made in mexico) is Better than the Squier Strat but, from personal experiences with the Frontman amp, to tell you the Truth your Fender is not going to sound much different than the Squier wiith that amp (With maybe the Exception of a little nicer clean sound) but the Distortion will still sound bland and crackly with the frontman (Trust me I've played a guitar with Seymour Duncun humbucker Pickups in it and the Distortion still sounded pretty bad on the Amp).

But all in all the Squier are definetly good for begginers Guitars, but If you feel like your Past begginers level or ready to have some Quality Equitment, then I say go for it!!

One more thing If you plan on Keeping the Amp, Then I strongly suggest on getting some Pedals(if you don't already have them) to do something about the tone, Even the multieffect units that have Amp Simulators make a world of a difference,

otherwise Just buy a better Amp biggrin.gif

Is the difference mainly in the sound ? So better pickups and stuff and better built material. Or is there also a noticable difference in feel.
My cheap knockoff strat just doesn't feel so good like my ibanez neck and so and I also can't seem to get a low action without buzzing strings. Would this be different (the feeling thingie) with a decent fender strat ?
