Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Van Halen Style Rhythm by Alex Feather

While working on a Big Ben's Land of Legato i've decided to rec this one. I was practicing it when i joined GMC but then was a bit away from this great lesson. It's not prefect - there're some timing issues and random noises.

Hey there fellow AMT user smile.gif

I think that in terms of timing this take is very good! What you could do to improve it would be to put a little more meat in your tone - maybe raising the gain a little? What settings have you used on the AMT?

When you will have a richer tone, you will be able to make the take sound more natural smile.gif

Hi Jouve! This is not a bad take! I think that you still have to play this one trying to get a groovier playing. Your right hand should be rigid and move more fluently, even when you are not playing. Check how Alex's hand keeps moving up and down, even when he is not reaching the strings to keep the timing and groove. That's the way to go!

Very nice take! I think you got the notes down. One important aspect of this lesson is finding the groove (or "the pocket"). You are playing slightly ahead of the beat throughout. Try playing a bit with a laid back feeling. That means finding the pocket for the groove. Usually the pocket is found slightly behind the beat. There are 3 ways : playing ahead of the beat (rushing), on top of the beat (Spot on) and behind the beat (laid back). This tune has the pocket behind the beat. Try being slightly "late" when playing (on purpose) and see if you can catch that pocket. Be careful though - its very small (milliseconds), you don't want to be too late smile.gif

One famous phenomenon is that we often tend to "rush" when being recorded smile.gif Drummers on the other hand tend to play on the faster tempo when recorded.
