Limiting Beliefs, Cant help but look back

I wanna get something off my chest, and I can't really tell my friends (because none of them are musicians) but I think this community would understand.

The past few months of getting back into guitar, I've had a lot of limiting beliefs. some of which include (but are not limited to):
-My hands are never gonna be strong enough to play rapid chord changes
-My wrist is never gonna get use to playing standing up
-I'm never gonna get use to singing and playing at the same time
-I'm not gonna be able to afford all that equipment

Most of which, I can console myself and say I'll get use to it, or that I'll get better with time. But the very thing that I cant shake off has to do with just that; Time.

All that time I wasted not playing, not practicing. It hits me hard now because playing the guitar is not just some hobby to me (as I'm sure its not just a hobby to most of you). As much as I can tell myself things like "I was meant to pick it up now" or something similar, it doesn't change the fact that I feel like I wasted a ton of time. It makes me feel like a faliure, and no matter how much I try to shake it off and toughen up, at the end of the day I still feel some loser trying so hard to be someone he isnt.

I feel your pain, i lost a year of playing becuase of a bad teacher who just taught me how to play songs and in the lesson all we did was play the song. But you shouldn't think like that your just putting your self down. Try and forget about it, you can't change the past so try and get over it.

Hey man,
don’t be so hard on yourself - I am 26 and i picked up the guitar a year ago when i was 25. So ive started later than allot of other GMC'ers. But I rarely think negative thoughts about not being able to do this or achieve that. I just listen to what Kris and the other instructors have to teach - and work as hard as I possibly can.

I also never look at other players and think "I suck" , rather I admire thier skills and tell myself anything is achievable with hard work. This is the basic foundation I believe Kris created GMC on.

With positive attidue you CAN be a great guitarist I am sure of it smile.gif

If you like it, do it, doesn't matter what age you start in... not everyone can one day wake up when their 12 years old or even less and decide that now their gonna spend alot of time for music, those people are rare, and you shouldn't feel bad that you'r not one of them.

First of all, scew equiment.

The rest is ALL about practice. EVERY time you learn a new chord it takes a few days/weeks maybe even months to be able to change to that chord fast. Same with singing and playing, just that I think it will take a bit longer time. Just adjust your strap to a comfortable height and start practicing standing up.

When I first started practicing fingerpicking blues I thought "Oh man, its gonna take years for me to manage to do this." Well of course, it takes years to get good at it, but now with practice I can manage to play simple songs without problems. Change chords and keep the rythm with my thumb all the time, wich is really hard. But I managed trough practice and I'm not gonna give up till I'm as good as Bjørn Berge.

NO ONE is better than anyone at anything, no one have more talent anyone else, its ALL ABOUT PRACTICE, no matter how late you started!

dont worry if you feel you're wasting your time at guitar.

I always used to think this.

But just because you're not playing 200000 bpm for 10 hours a day doesnt mean your not getting goodness from the guitar.

Like Paul Gibert has said a few times: every time you pick up the guitar, hold it, and do anything with it it'll do you good.

Soon enough you'll subconsiously decide you want to put in more hours/ spent time doing different things on guitar.

Just remember everything works out for the best wink.gif

Playing music is fun man. I dont know how many times I picked up a guitar and felt happy for a moments time. I could care less if my hands are slow, I cant speed pick or have limited guitar skills because all those times that I played was a moment for me.

I've seen the same attitude from young people lately... sad.gif
Have few students here with questions like... "when shall I be able to play good?",
"How long does it take to play like someone?" etc.
Asking "when" and looking "at the watch" will NOT help you...no offense tho.smile.gif
You should look about what is it that you have to do to achieve something.
Set your goals and go,and as members said before, don't look back smile.gif
Time is relative here if you're hard worker. wink.gif

Hi. Please don't be so hard on yourself. I just turned 39, been wanting to play since 15. I never had the funds or REAL dedication to even start. I have been to more online lessons than I care to count. I have now been playing for only about 8 months...you CAN do it. As Muris has sadi...you cannot "watch the clock". You will reach your goals. Set yourself-up a small list of things you want to acconplish, and just go for it, As long as your fingers, and brain works...you can play until you draw your last breath on this earth. DO NOT GIVE UP!!!! The most important thing is...do not listen to ANYONE who tells you it cannot be done. You have already made one of the BEST choices you could ever make on your playing, and that is joining this site.
Keep up the good work, stick around, and more than anything else...play from your heartBy the way. A "loser" gives-up and never trys...you are far from being a loser. WE are ALL here to assist you.

If you spend all of your energy looking in the past, you are doomed to never move forward. I stopped playing for over 10 years and just picked up my guitar again in july. Was it wasted time , no. Life happens, things change and it all comes together for a reason. You are playing again now and dedicating more time that you wish you had dedicated years ago. Let it go and practice today, practice tomorrow and forget about yesterday. Put your energy into practice and not into worry..... you will amaze yourself at how far you can go.

Best of luck and don't ever give up on yourslef !!

Muris did some good points!

Last month i was totally wasted and i didn't play guitar for the whole 2 weeks. The day before yesterday i picked it up and i had a blast in progress. There are always bad moments and great moments so if you are hit by a bad moment and think about all you listed, just take a break and do something else. Then, you'll just feel it when you are ready to get back to practice and guitar.

Don't think about it too much! Just take a break! smile.gif

The way i view guitar, and life in general is that the only limits that affect you are the limits you give yourself, and the limits you let affect you. You cant look back and say "I Wasted time", you have to look forward and make the best of the time you have, the most important thing about guitar is not getting as good as you can be, the most important thing is that you enjoy it.

This is a great attitude and something we should all remember. If wasting time is a bad thing, then surely wasting time worrying about the time you've previously wasted is even less useful blink.gif
