Is anyone out there using either of these Linux OS for Recording purposes?
I'm looking at going this route with a new PC Build and using http://ardour.org/features.html as my DAW.
Does anyone have any experience with this Software? If so, how do you find it compared to other DAW's?
It seems to be compatible with VST's does it run VSTi's like NI Kontakt, Massive, Guitar Rig etc??
I appreciate any and all information and advice in this endeavour!!

Very interesting question and topic, I'll be following it.
Unfortunately, I don't have experience with this DAW but those are wonderful news for linux community - I remember far back, I couldn't find any decent DAW for linux. I have some experience with running Ubuntu and must say that I find that operating system really useful, cool looking and it runs really well. Reminds me a bit of Mac OS X.

I will keep you all informed as to what happens! I've just ordered a new Hard Drive for the installation!!
I have a friend who has been 'coding' in Linux for a while now, it was he who suggested this route to me. He's going to help and be my Tech Support guy!!

So, I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and have to say that I'm very happy with it.
I have been running Reaper via a program called WINE (Windows Emulator) which will host ANY Windows Program, although having done some research it seems that it does have a few 'buggy' problems with some software. I haven't had a problem yet though.
I tried the free version of Ardour and loved it's GUI although it wasn't as easy or straightforward to use as Reaper, I'm definitely thinking of upgrading to the full version though and learning how to use it.
Next on my Download/Install list is a Video Editor!!!

I really prefer Ubuntu over Windows. I haven't done much with it as most of the programs I was using only worked with Windows, I will have to try WINE. You've got me interested in messing with it again.

If you do then go for Mint 16 "Pedra", it comes with Media Players, Libre Office Suite and a whole host of Applications already built in!
I've found a few Video Editors with the most popular one seeming to be Kdenlive!
As I said WINE works fine for most things but apparently is 'buggy' with some other although I've had no problems yet!!

Great to see folks using things other than mac/windows for music stuff Always a good thing to learn more about other options. It takes brave soul to head down this road IMHO as you are swimming upstream a bit in terms of driver support and plugin choices but it's great to see folks doing it anyway. Share some screen grabs and such so we can see what it looks like!

If I had another machine, is really consider using Linux on it. I wouldn't want it as my only OS, because of compatibility issues, and I think music production on Linux is still very new.

I started with it as a Bootable USB Drive as in this video:-

I do have another PC that is on Win 7 but if everything I need can run in Linux or is available in a Linux version I'd seriously think about swapping to it on that machine too.
I've only had a fairly short time to play with it so far but haven't had any issues yet.

I've installed a triple boot setup on my Windows computer. It has Vista, Linux Mint & KXStudio (a music studio version based on Linux Mint). KXStudio has a lot of multimedia programs installed already. Ardour is one of them. It has many more and it also includes Reaper. Some of the programs are Demo's (like Reaper) but most are Open Source (free!). I've played around with Linux for years taking our old "dead" Windows machines & reviving them with Linux os's. I play around with them but am by no means any type of expert.

KXStudio has Rakarrak & Guitarix for effects. I have done some recording but I'm just not happy with the sound I've made with it. Most likely issues with myself & not the software ! I need to figure how to do video recording on it soon.

It may be free but does take time (something I don't have a lot of) to learn how to use.
