I have this old ibanez GIO guitar it keeps going out of tune. I want to install new tuners, but it seems i need to do some drilling if i dont get the ones with the right size. I wish to upgrade the tuners myself. I want it to be hassle free ..no drilling and nothing. Any recommendations on how to go about it. Also, advise brands of tuners...
if you get the right size it's more or less plug n play. Gotoh is one brand you could have a look at
Take one of the old ones off and measure the size of the hole and buy some that have that size,
or measure the size of the pole of the one you take out...
PS You shouldn't use a drill you should use a reamer...
you will prob have to drill some small guide holes for the fixing screws.
Most import guitars have 10mm sized holes for the tuning pegs. Guitarfetish.com has a set of locking tuners for around $30. I have a set myself that is waiting to be installed. They seem like they're decent quality, especially for the price. You might want to consider them instead of dishing out big bucks on an entry level guitar.
Are you sure that the tuners are problem? I've seen some guitars having tuning problems because of the bridge or the nut, so you may want to take it to guitar tech to check it out before you invest. This is what I would do, so just a thought from me.
Mudbone has a good point, are you sure it's the tuners? Is it a double locking trem or no?
