Do You Listen To Instrumental Guitar Albums? |

Hey guys. I was listening to this album that Cosmin suggested:
And decided to start this thread is to ask you if you use to listen to instrumental albums based mostly on guitar nowadays, and if the answer is yes, which are your favorite albums. In my case, I mostly listen to song based albums than instrumental songs. I rarely find myself listening to a full guitar album and I'm not sure about the reason. There are some exceptions like Explosions in the sky and many other post rock bands which are instrumental but not exactly guitar based. I hope to find really cool albums to discover and that blow my mind as these ones did it in the past. I also enjoyed Guthrie's erotic cakes and Vinnie Moore's "to the core". In my case it would be like 80/20 % regular vs instrumental music. I like to shape my sense of phrasing mainly on the vocal lines.

Since I listen to a lot of Jazz, my answer is yes.
Most 'rock' instrumental albums (as well as a lot of fusion) - guitar or otherwise - I lose interest in pretty quickly. I need good melody and composition ... and dynamics. Not just solos and riffs and the same overly gained out or the same overly clean tone all the time. IMO, most inst rock records are just an excuse to play a big riff over and over again or show that you learned the lydian mode and heres a progression I wrote to solo over it with. That said I do really enjoy: Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow, Wired and There and Back Satriani - Surfing w/t Alien Mahavishnu Orchestra Robben Ford - Inside Story Alan Holdsworth Danny Gatton Al Dimeola - elegant gypsy Return to Forever - Hymn of the 7th Galaxy I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

Movie sound-tracks are the only instrumental albums I listen to - James Horner, et. al. I did wear out my Jason Becker / Marty Friedman Cacophony CD back in the 90's, but that was about it. Wasn't/isnt a fan of Surfing with the alien - too pop-ish for my taste
