Hey guys. I was listening to this album that Cosmin suggested:
And decided to start this thread is to ask you if you use to listen to instrumental albums based mostly on guitar nowadays, and if the answer is yes, which are your favorite albums. In my case, I mostly listen to song based albums than instrumental songs. I rarely find myself listening to a full guitar album and I'm not sure about the reason. There are some exceptions like Explosions in the sky and many other post rock bands which are instrumental but not exactly guitar based. I hope to find really cool albums to discover and that blow my mind as these ones did it in the past. I also enjoyed Guthrie's erotic cakes and Vinnie Moore's "to the core". I don't even remember where I first heard of this, but it's one of the few full instrumental albums I really enjoy... I've never heard about this. It sounds progressive and modern. Thanks for sharing. I did a quick search to know more about Gru, and it seems that it's a one-man project. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Gru/121365784602589 It seems that this thread made me attack good instrumental music... I just remembered this band: -------------------- My lessons

I listen to a lot of instrumental bands and guitarists. The ones you listed by Satch and Vai are both great albums. One of my favlurote guitarists is Buckethead. Especially his softer albums. Try searching for his song 'Big D's Touch' I'm on my phone so embedding doesn't work. Also, I think I told you before Gab but I'm a big fan of post rock. Oh, and then there's Godspeed you black emperor. That is one scary band, their music is almost hypnotic if you listen to it before falling asleep when you have some spare time, try 'The Dead Flag Blues' Thanks for the suggestions mate. I searched for Buckethead's song and yeah, I knew it! I don't remember his songs names but this is an album that I used to listen. In 98% from my time I listen instrumental music. So, I guess I really love this kind of music I think this is one of the reason that I never wish to play in a band. I'm that kind of musician who prefer that all attention of people to be only around my playing not around a cute vocal guy/girl Andy Timmons with his Resolution album it's daily in my playlist I never feel bored listened this album Other instrumentals songs that I listen are too many but I will remind about an very nice instrumental album made by Govi: Nice track. I like the Spanish vibe on it. -------------------- My lessons

In my case it would be like 80/20 % regular vs instrumental music. I like to shape my sense of phrasing mainly on the vocal lines.

Since I listen to a lot of Jazz, my answer is yes.
Most 'rock' instrumental albums (as well as a lot of fusion) - guitar or otherwise - I lose interest in pretty quickly. I need good melody and composition ... and dynamics. Not just solos and riffs and the same overly gained out or the same overly clean tone all the time. IMO, most inst rock records are just an excuse to play a big riff over and over again or show that you learned the lydian mode and heres a progression I wrote to solo over it with. That said I do really enjoy: Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow, Wired and There and Back Satriani - Surfing w/t Alien Mahavishnu Orchestra Robben Ford - Inside Story Alan Holdsworth Danny Gatton Al Dimeola - elegant gypsy Return to Forever - Hymn of the 7th Galaxy I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

This is a very interesting list and post mate. I will add some of those albums to my playlist. "just solos and riffs and the same overly gained out or the same overly clean tone all the time." This can be a very valid reason why an album can bore me soon... -------------------- My lessons

Movie sound-tracks are the only instrumental albums I listen to - James Horner, et. al. I did wear out my Jason Becker / Marty Friedman Cacophony CD back in the 90's, but that was about it. Wasn't/isnt a fan of Surfing with the alien - too pop-ish for my taste

Andy Timmons is possibly my favourite Instrumentalist. I'm also enjoying Irene ketikidi's LP 'Martial Arts and Magic Tricks' at the moment!!! Cool video talking about the album. The samples and his comments sound interesting. I'll check more. -------------------- My lessons
