I've been working on this for years. I have a Masters Degree and my student loan debt was crippling ($123,000) . I support education, but I don't support the crushing student loan debt that often comes along with it. There are many means to get out from under these crushing loans. I spend years trying to get free from mine. I would never have been able to pay them off in my lifetime. I'm glad to have an education and honored to be a teachers. I will teach for the rest of my life in one way or another, for free or for pay. I love teaching. I've never been attached to money. I"m very glad to free of this burden. Here is a great web site with a variety of ways to help get you free from crippling educationl debt.

This is my final discarge letter. They monitor you for 3 years after you get discharged.

I feel honestly blessed to be free of this burden. I"m thankful that I was able to learn so much for so long and thankful that I can teach what I've learned to others.

Todd

Fantastic - congratulations!

So you got discharged because you teach? That's a fantastic rule! And they will be monitoring your teaching for the discharge to remain?

This is great news! Congratulations!

It sounds like an apartment loans for students in Poland. Young people who study far from their hometown have to get a place to stay and campus dorms are too pricey for what they get. Much better to get an apartment but it's more than an average student can afford either. I was lucky to study somewhere where I can just drive 50 kilometers but for some it wasn't worth the travel costs and time wasted. I observe what it looks like and I want to earn my stuff without loans because it's easy to have a bad time paying them back in my country.

I am glad the burden is gone from you, Todd
isn't it because the colleges lobby congress to provide " loans " so the colleges have been able to raise their rates , for how many years now ?
The federal government screws up everything it touches

Sort of.

The American higher-education system is really four different systems in one: public colleges, private colleges, nonprofit institutions, and "for-profit" colleges.

The biggest system is the public one, which includes two-year community colleges and public four-year (or more) state institutions. Most US college students attend a school in this public system, which is funded through state and local subsidies, along with students’ tuition dollars and some federal aid (Sallie Mae and grants).

In this public system, the high cost of college has as much to do with politics as economics. With economics, the cost of everything has gone up - prices and wages. College is a service not a thing. In the US, services rarely (if ever) drop in price when demand is high. Regarding politics: many state legislatures have been spending less and less per student on higher education for the past three decades. The ideology of small government has forced, by law, state govs to balance their budgets. States have been leaving once world class public universities begging for money. The cuts got really deep after the 2008 recession, never recovering.
*When "Community College" began, it was free or very low cost. This was during the Truman admin, 1947 (In Cali since 1868). In the late 60s less tax dollars began going towards education and low and behold ... the 'Student Loan Marketing Association' was created in 1972.

Anyway, the easiest way for universities to make up for the state budget cuts was to shift some, or a lot of the cost to students ... and to find richer students. Once public funding was cut from these schools, not surprisingly they started acting more like businesses. State cutbacks did not necessarily make colleges more efficient, just more entrepreneurial. Many schools began to enroll more full-paying foreign and out-of-state students to make up the difference. This started to make college for the economically elite only. So yes, there is lobbying for fed grants and loans.
*I can't find any consistent numbers on yearly total lobbying $$ to congress but it's probably in the range of $50 million and that has actually been decreasing since 2010. Go figure.

Full disclosure ... my wife is a public, two year community college, language professor.

It as a bit of a Miracle to be honest. There are many folks who are not so lucky and who are buried under $100,000 of student loan debt for the rest of their lives. I hope all student loan debt is eventually forgiven and paid for by taxing the crap out of the "Super Rich" : )
