Melechesh - Mesopotamian Death Metal, Killer new Death/Mesopotamian Metal Band

They started out as Black Metal (Yes, Satanic Metal) in Jerusalem of all places. I can't imagine it was easy being in a Satanic Band in the Holy land. They have since drifted away from being "Black Metal" and now call themselves "Mesopotamian Metal" which blends Middle Eastern musical/folk elements and Death Metal. While I appreciate the musicality in Black Metal, I've never been a fan of the form as such just as the lyrical content does tend to be repetitive as you might imagine. Some Black Metal is just downright brilliant, but aside from that Melechesh's new album is quite good. I picked it recently and its pretty odd listen and first but it grows on you. I'm a big fan of what is called "Blackened" Metal which is Metal that makes use of BLACK METAL elements but avoids the whole "Satanism" thing entirely. Bands like BEHEMOTH are good example. You should give their new album a listen, their mixture of progressive metal with elements of thrash and death metal and the use of eastern melodies and folk elements is just incredible. I last met him here in Stockholm a month ago when they played with Nile. Al though I am usually not a fan of growling I really like their thrashy (and occasionally groovy) side! I must say how impressed I am by the guitar work in the band and I appreciate the Middle Eastern flair they put in to it as well. And what a great tour to put them together with Nile! Add Orphaned Land to the tour and it's the Triumvirate of Mesopotamian influenced Metal. Any chance you could have Moloch to a guest lesson or something? That would be really spiff! It's the BASILICA CISTERN, a marvel of Byzantine construction that is essentially a large indoor water storage tank under a huge Masque in Istanbul, Turkey.
