Wanted to share a relatively new band called MELECHESH. They started out as Black Metal (Yes, Satanic Metal) in Jerusalem of all places. I can't imagine it was easy being in a Satanic Band in the Holy land. They have since drifted away from being "Black Metal" and now call themselves "Mesopotamian Metal" which blends Middle Eastern musical/folk elements and Death Metal. While I appreciate the musicality in Black Metal, I've never been a fan of the form as such just as the lyrical content does tend to be repetitive as you might imagine. (Yes yes, Death, Satan, death, satan, we get it, fight ensues) Anyhoo, here is a vid. Check em out smile.gif

Well, First off I must defend Black Metal as it is not all Satanic. Some Black Metal is just downright brilliant, but aside from that Melechesh's new album is quite good. I picked it recently and its pretty odd listen and first but it grows on you.

Also, check out Orphaned Land if you like these guys, There are some similarities in themes.

Quite true, I was probably painting with too big a brush there. I'm a big fan of what is called "Blackened" Metal which is Metal that makes use of BLACK METAL elements but avoids the whole "Satanism" thing entirely. Bands like BEHEMOTH are good example. Some brilliant fretwork.

I really like Melechesh's new album, but when it comes to mesopotamian metal, I think Orphaned Land are even better and more interesting musically. You should give their new album a listen, their mixture of progressive metal with elements of thrash and death metal and the use of eastern melodies and folk elements is just incredible. Plus, it's kind of a challenge for western ears at first wink.gif

Hehe it's funny you brought this up - Moloch (the second guitarist) is my old childhood friend and the one who introduced me to the electric guitar. I last met him here in Stockholm a month ago when they played with Nile.

Al though I am usually not a fan of growling I really like their thrashy (and occasionally groovy) side!

Great music, thanks for sharing!

Just to mention, one of my friends is organising a black metal gig for his girlfriend's birthday party and wants me as a gutarist in his band. Can you imagine me with a painted face? :DDDD

I told him OK, I'll paint my face, but the only painting I'll wear is the one Ace has from Kiss :DDD

Wow, they are great! I'm not a fan of black metal, but I dig the music. I like the grooves, some sections relate to some small extent to Gojira to me.

Speaking of Eastern/Asian/Mesopotamian music, we are going to explore the HARMONIC MINOR SCALE in today's VIDEO CHAT LESSON in about one hour at 5PM EST Saturday/Today.

The raised seventh is a wonderful thing in scales and chord progressions. Hope to see everyone there smile.gif

That's very cool and just goes to show it's a small world as they say and a very small world as they say. I must say how impressed I am by the guitar work in the band and I appreciate the Middle Eastern flair they put in to it as well. And what a great tour to put them together with Nile! Add Orphaned Land to the tour and it's the Triumvirate of Mesopotamian influenced Metal.

Any chance you could have Moloch to a guest lesson or something? That would be really spiff!

Todd

I dig this musically...but no matter how many times I try, I just can't get into the vocals of this genre of music. Shame really, as some of the music itself is killer!

I just realized I recognized the location in this video. It's the BASILICA CISTERN, a marvel of Byzantine construction that is essentially a large indoor water storage tank under a huge Masque in Istanbul, Turkey. It's a bit interesting to think how a band like Melechesh got permission to shoot in a Masque but well done on the video!
