GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ Ivan's Metal Arpeggiator Collab :)

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic May 20 2009, 03:19 PM

Hey guys, I've decided it's enough of the blues from me for now, since I did two blues collabs recently. Now it's time for something completely different - nice and heavy metal collab! smile.gif

This collaboration's name is "Metal Arpeggiator", and I would like from participants to include at least one arpeggiated lick or sequence in this one. It shouldn't be hard, since arpeggio comes in many shapes and sizes, and it is a pretty wide topic, so one arpeggiated lick should be really easy to do + it will definitely sound metal! The more you do the better in fact! smile.gif

Anyone can join in, as always, and this is audio collab primarily, but if you want you can put your video on youtube. Final mix will be audio mix.
I've purposely created a bassy thick backing track with mids left intact so you can solo and make your guitar audible on this one. Just try to use a preset that has some degree of mids/treble involved and your take will cut great! smile.gif

There's a backing bellow this text for you to check it out. If you decide you want to participate, sign up here, and I'll open upload thread tomorrow.

key: E minor
tempo: 100bpm (1/4 time in the first part of the backing and 1/2 time in the second part)

Nothing special really, it means that the backing is splitted into two equal parts, first part has one groove that is in 1/4 feel, which makes it sound a bit faster, and the second part is in 1/2 feel which makes it sound a bit slower. The tempo is the same, so basically only the "feel" of the tempo speed changes when the groove changes somewhere in the middle.

Bang your head against the stage
Like you never did before
Make it ring make it bleed

In a frenzied madness
With your leather and your spikes
Heads are bobbing all around
It is hot as hell tonight

Adrenalin starts to flow
Youre thrashing all around
Acting like a maniac
Whiplash

Start off with E minor pentatonic, or E minor scale mate. Then use the existing licks that you know, and possibly insert some runs as well. Doesn't have to be fast, just some sequences on top of the E minor scale notes, can be a simple one as well. Doing a fast solo is cool in metal but not all solos in metal have to be ultra technical. Some great metal solos use blues licks up to speed, couple of runs, arpeggios lines etc. Connect them together in a natural way and you will get a cool sounding solo. In the end, whatever you come up with, we will discuss it and it will definitely be a valuable experience mate. smile.gif

Ivan i would join but... i dont know how to play in a certain key, i know its probably easy but ive never done it before, also im getting a new camcorder on tuesday rolleyes.gif

You have plenty of time man, and it's not that big of a deal to play in one key. Are you familiar with minor pentatonic boxes or major scale boxes or anything similar?

Posted by: Eat-Sleep-andJam May 23 2009, 06:27 PM

Is this one full? I would maybe like to join, for my first collab.

does it matter if i just jam along to it? cause i dont realy know to make tabs properly on guitar pro lol

Of course! You can do whatever you like man, it's not necessary to use anything specific. IF you can pull out a small arpeggio, do it, if not doesn't matter, there will be other material as well, so it's perfectly alright ! smile.gif

I'll sign you up! smile.gif

Cool thanks Ivan, And so do you want a take with the backing and without ?

Listen mate, Ive heard you play, and if I can give this a bash then you certainly can too! If you want to toss a few ideas backwards and forwards on scales and that mate let me know coz I dont know the first thing about metal and am open to any ideas! biggrin.gif

Hey hey Ivan!
Excellent collab and I would really like to join if there are any slots left?

Posted by: kjutte May 25 2009, 04:00 PM

I am a bit lost in the first part here.
I could shred through it, but that would be very dull.

Does anyone have some ideas for this part? I am guessing some metal riffing, but I don't know any xD

Same, the first parts rythm is kinda tricky to make anything unique.

Check out some of the uploads already done guys, I think any idea can be good. Just try to be creative and perhaps do a more simpler but functional approach. Often a good simple melody with a meaning/structure can have a lot more impact on the listener than bunch of notes with no or little structure. Try to look at it that way, and perhaps derive a small melody out of the Eminor scale notes/chords.

The part has powerchords going in this sequence: A5 C5 B5 A5 F#5 G5. Perhaps following them with arpeggiated eight notes could sound nice, just a thought.

Hey Ivan!
I already have a really cool lick to use in the second part, it goes like:
E|---3--------------------------------------------------
B|------5-----5/-7--8--7--5~-------------------------
G|---------4--------------------------------------------

But, the problem is the intro wink.gif It's hard to come up with something.... BTW, you said I'll extend the limit a bit, but wasn't the limit 15th june? It's the 10th now, so I'll make it wink.gif

That looks cool! smile.gif

For the intro just simplify things and do some repetative licks or something, just a thought.

I was referring to participant number limit, since I started with 15 participants max, and now the number is 25 (with you 26) smile.gif

Posted by: Outlaw2112 Jun 10 2009, 11:30 PM

Yeah im having a little problem coming up with something for the intro also... Im gonna finish it up tonight or tomorrow night though

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Jun 11 2009, 12:10 AM

No probs, take your time smile.gif As I said, if you have problems - simplify licks.

Posted by: Velvet Roger Jun 11 2009, 06:22 AM

Hey Ivan,

Sorry, but I can't find the proper time to complete this collab due to some time contraints at work and private as well.

Thanks for the understanding smile.gif

Roger

Wow Ivan, sure you want to do 26 4 hour videos?? I mean, thats 104 hours in total, you'll have no sleep for 5 days!

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Jun 11 2009, 04:12 PM

I'm sure biggrin.gif I'm doing them as we speak, two today, 19 more to go biggrin.gif
