Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Petrucci Style - Arabic Sensation by Jonathan Burgos

I remember well when this lesson was posted and I was so excited that one day I may be able to play something like this. Today I am happy to present my own take, of course not as good as the original, but I'm happy nonetheless ;) I practised this lesson and another one I just posted on REC for a very long time, and in fact it proved to be counter productive - because I practiced it for too long, I became a bit bored by it, and started to not concentrate strong enough - in effect I learned not the polished version, but a more shoddy one :/ When I finally realized what happened I decided to record it as fast as possible, and move on to new lessons, so here it is ;)

Hi again Marek!

This lesson is killer and I think that you are doing a very good job with this one. The first thing that comes to mind when I hear this take is that your lead tone is not the best one for this solo. It sounds ok for rhythm but it is lacking body for the solo section, it sounds like "small", it is lacking low and bass mid frequencies, or maybe it has too much high ones.

Besides this, your playing is good on the rhythm section and in general it's also good on the solo part. There are some moments when the connection between licks could be smoother while other parts sound very natural. Your tempo is good and I like your bending and vibrato techniques on this one.

The faster patterns starting at 1:16 are not sounding as clear as the original take, and I think that the reason is that you are playing them faster than Jonathan so please re-check the rhythm there.

Keep on the good job!

Very good take! There are some details to fix - for me probably the most visible were timming issues around 1:00 to : 1:12 As for the speed, final part I have some doubts. Even on the original lesson it sounds like being played slightly "freely" yet still there was a feeling of regular position shifts. In your take we can hear (and even see on your face biggrin.gif) that you focus on when to switch the postion while playing previous lick. It affects the performance. Maybe you should try to play it totaly free - no focusing, just being relaxed and "let the things happen".

It might not be working for all the players out there but I found myslef having problems with playing things I used to play easily, if I do try to be to precise (focusign too much and getting tensed) smile.gif

Hi Marek - this was a good lesson choice!

First of all, what I can notice straight away in this video is that you really like this lesson and enjoy playing it. Your vibe in this video and playing attitude is great and those things always translate into the performance on the instrument.

This is a hard lesson due to many elements it includes and I think you did a good job. Riffing sounded great as well as solo part. What I think that cripples this take in a big way is your guitar tone. The riffing/rhythm tone is decent but the lead patch you were using sounds too thin. To be honest, I think it just makes your performance which is very nice and decent sound several levels lower just because of the tone. Good news? Tone is relatively easy to fix, you just need to fiddle with the settings and pots smile.gif What is wrong with it? It doesn't have body and warmth. Compare with the Johnatan tone in the lesson which is very warm and defined. Try lowering gain and treble for start and experiment with bass and middle frequencies and see where it goes.

I think that this take was very nice and there are details left if you'd like to take it to the next level.

Details such as :

- Working on timing in the ending fast runs - 1:13-end
- Tweaking the guitar tone
- Working on vibrato speed and width (how far you bend the string up and down when vibrating it)
