 wah is indeed great pedal, my favorite effect!you can check out my wah rhythm lesson here and I'm am currently recording some wah soloing lessons beginner and intermediate level with some cool and interesting wah licks! have fun with wah!

congrat ! if its a manual wah you have to make a balance between hand & foot when you are playing the rytem
and if its auto wah the balance only fro your hand .have a nice day |

You can make a nice effect even just scratching the strings and doing up quarter thumps with your foot. Try it it's fun!:)

May I add that when you hold the wah foot down, and have a solo boost, like Kris mentioned, sounds much better playing fast notes. THey all sound crispier, and cut through the mix better.
