GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Music Exam Tomorrow
Posted by: Tolek Nov 9 2008, 06:26 PM
Good evening!
Tomorrow, I am going to have a music exam. I changed school and section (from maths section to music section) and I have to learn all the stuff my new class did last year.
My program:
-Music history (Middle Ages: Gregorian choir [modes and neumen], troubadours, ancient polyphonie, Renaissance: motet, mass, Luther, Jazz: preforms of popular music)
-Harmony (cadences, counterpoint/descant, the triad and his inversions, [perfect and not perfect] consonances, dissonances)
-play two pieces on guitar (I chose: "Etude N°8" by Napoleon Coste AND "In Sorrow´s Wake" by Andrew York)
-sing two pieces (which my teacher chose: "Nun ruhen alle Wälder" a german folksong [composition by J.S. Bach] AND "Siyahamba" an african song)
I am pretty new to harmony, but my teacher said that I am very good at it and make not many mistakes. My problems are mainly singing and history. If I really know the song, I can sing it. History is pretty interesting, but it is so much and it´s difficult to remember. However, I will master everything. I learned for few days now and still have left some hours.
Wish me luck!
Cheers,
Tolek

I go to school to Diekirch (in Luxembourg). It is a simple secondary school where several sections are (from A to G: Languages, Maths, Biologie, Economy, Art [painting], Music and finally a general section).

Hey guys,
I just came back from school. My exam went pretty well despite I didn´t write very complete answers in history. The total of points is 60 (like always here in Luxembourg), 30 points history and the other part harmony. I had to write a counterpoint which became cool I think (a bit like Bach ) and two scales (C Dorian and F Lydian) which is no problem neither. Additionally, I had to complete a sopran melody with alt, tenor and bass. I had few problems, but I solved them, some mistakes could be still there. And a last exercice: describe the following triads (function, inversion,...).
The other part of my exam consisted of praxis. I played two pieces on guitar (my teacher said: "Your guitar is very calming, Tolek! ) and I had to sing... Well, it could be better, but I made it ok.
Tomorrow, I´ll have the results... Keep your fingers still crossed!
Edit: And thanks for your wishes, too, Ramiro, Velvet Roger, Bogdan and Nemanja!

It was more enjoyable than any other test. I had really fun to compose a 2nd voice. I´ll ask my teacher to get that test back so that I can show it here as well.

That would be awesome!
I haven't done classical music in a while. Love the idea of counterpoint and simultaneous voices going around . Its one of my favorite things in music actually. Bach owns everybody in this no doubt

Can't wait for your results and scanned copy of the exam
Use to have some classical book from Berklee bookstore about traditional harmony. Have to order it again - that was very fun read - I tested out of traditional harmony and counterpoint without going trough whole book but Jazz and Classical counterpoints are two different worlds - I love it

Woho, congratulations
Thanks!
I got my test back and wrote down the counterpoint. The MIDI file shows the melody that was given and then the same with the counterpoint. I hope you like it.
In the choir exercice (where I had to find chords to it and fill in the notes correctly), I only made a stupid mistake: parallel 5ths (bass and tenor).
All in all, I got 45/60 points.
I´m in.
